Anyone moved up to America junior, got a job, bought property etc? My US $$ would go a lot further up there, and I want to retire next year :blah:

Oh, by the way, you'll notice that biking is MUCH more expensive up here...

Kidding about the retiring part. Seems that property is super cheap up there though. I need to come and visit, but what do you guys think of the Rossland area?

Too late. I've just spoken with Canadian Border Patrol, and you've been "Black Flagged" as a persona non grata in Canada.
That having been said, Victoria is probably the coolest place I've been to in a while, I'd live there in a heartbeat!

I know when I score stuff for our Montreal brethren, we have to make sure it looks used when they take it home, otherwise they will have to pay duties on it at the border.

You have to hide the goods at the border though, or you get raped with duties...

How bout $600 for a Chris King rear hub...:dead:

The Rossland are is quite nice. From what I hear, there is lots of riding there. Expect hot summers full of forest fires and cold winters full of beautiful skiing and scenery...

Not when you buy everything from the states. I couldn't afford to bike up here if it wasn't for peeps in seattle and the internet :)

American income...canadian cost of living....hmmmmmm in a heartbeat. :D...I don't have issues with cost on parts anymore.

And I think, since you wouldn't WORK in canada, you could easily do that...lucky bastard. PErsonally I wouldn't live on an island though (sorry burnt)...I like the mainland to much. I would try Squamish for the best of all worlds or maybe way up in pemberton or the stunning rossland...so many options...so much riding...damn canadian income :)

I moved up here when I was a kid...and really have not been back to my old stomping grounds in quite some time. Victoria and Van are pretty expensive to live (a half decent house in Vic will sell for at least $350-400,000. Prices here have really gone up in the past few years. I love it up here, but would love to move back to Oregon....we'll see.

Hahaha, "expensive" is such a relative term. You don't even want to know what a decent house goes for around here.

Islandmudpuppy. I have gotten into this discussion a few times. We pay crap. Heck even a house in whistler is cheap for some of these guys. They just fail to realize, some of them, we make signifigantly (in my job I make 30,000 american less than my counterparts) less in every job in Canada. Heck, even surgeons have ahard time buying up here :D

Well, everyone knows that only the rich live in Whistler. I don't know how you're doing it, Roasted. Unless you're holding back some 'good investment' info. :)

Don't expect biking in Victoria. Everything that was fairly decent was torn down to build golf courses. The Island is a fantastic place to live, but you have to go further north to tap into the quality biking.

Decent job and almost no rent. I lucked out for where I live. Couldn't buy here :D...I am paying rental prices from 1991 :)

Although now I am a member of the WHA and prices are even better. Might be buying here in a few years....crossing fingers.

sure BC isn't cheap... haven't been there in 15 years though.

been looking for guvment/enviro work, yet nothing! Van housing prices are ridiculous too! however, there's been some feeling that we're in a housing bubble (kinda like the high tech bubble) and it may burst soon. props may go down.

if you can't get into the western mountains (the interior is fricking awesome IMHO), try eastern ontario to montréal... mountains with downhill and snow activities.

stay away from the prairies... maybe western alberta (no income tax and lake louise!)

i commend you on your initiative

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it's as easy to just move to Canada as people make it sound in this thread. There is a whole immigration process just like the US, and if you only plan to move there for work it brings up a whole other set of issues. There are a whole lot of rules to entering Canada (to live) and it doesn't seem to be any easier than entering the US. My wife is from Quebec City and we just went through the whole permanent resident process this past year. It isn't easy here and I don't think it's that much different in Canada. Check out these links and you'll see what I'm talking about.

the big deciding factors for me right now areL
- Weather
- work

I love the hot/dry weather. Like I've preached many times before, I'll take a dust bowl over a mud bog. I also don't like snow anymore.

Work is the other thing keeping me here - I probably couldn't find anything if I moved back home (would move to BC tho, not NB) - that is unless I would decided to do something else.

I didn't think it would be easy which was really the reason for this thread. I was hoping that someone here had bought property in Canada so they could share their experiences. I can work just about anywhere so I wouldn't need a job in Canada, which I would think changes things quite a bit.

**Might be different if you own your own business**

from what I was told, if I had some property in Canada (well any links for that matter like house, bank accounts, etc.) then I would have to pay some sort of Canadian income tax.

So if you move to Canada to live there, but from for some company in the US - you might have to pay some special tax on top of ones you'll already be paying. This is just an assumption – something worth looking into for sure tho.

The difference is that you have permanent residence in the US and citizenship in Canada. Ridemonkey is talking about moving to Canada with no official residence paperwork and working through the internet. I guess if you crossed the border with very little and said you were just going to your vacation house nobody would notice, but if you showed up at the border with a u-haul truck they'd want to see your immigration paperwork.

Having done the reverse route and lived in the US, i can assure you that you do not have to pay 2 sets of taxes thanks to a nifty little pact called NAFTA.
