Maybe ask your kid which one he wants? All 3 systems have games suitable for all ages. If you get an xbox or PS3, just be sure to check the games he's playing. There are definitely some games out there that a 9 year old shouldn't be playing.

Anyway my vote goes for Xbox. Kinect notwithstanding, from personal experience I've noticed more people buying and then losing interest in the Wii fairly quickly than with most other systems.

Another vote for the Wii here. MarioKart is a blast and my 4 year old loves playing with us all! Lots of games, variety of games and not as expensive as the other big systems.
