Well, you "can" but unfortunately it's against the law in British Columbia to do that. Sorry.

dunno, why don't you ask her...
no its true, under BC law you are required to have at least 150mm of travel front and rear to decend grades steeper than 30 degrees. Also for some trails, you must be this tall to enter....Originally posted by FlashBullit

evil's are cool, but I liek my orange. I think if you have an evil though, that you are exempt from the law.Originally posted by zedro
ahh...the banality of evil....
Well you may be exempt but you need to get a hardtail permit. and in order to get that, you need to take the government safety course......Originally posted by Transcend

Yeah, it's a real shame that the B.C. gov't is so blatantly opposed to h.t. use, but the fact is, most h.t. riders are younger guys (b/c they can't afford squishy bikes) and they just can't vote! You can whine about it all you like, but until you're older, there's not much you can do about it. Kinda sucks, huh?
Mmike - I don't know a single dude who's ever gotten a hardtail permit. Far too much red tape, and the fees are ridiculous....

there is, however a cloaked & esoteric group of us who choose to ride the fabled knarled & mist-shrouded trails of the rugged canadian northwest without the aid or benefit of rear-wheel suspension devices. we ride covertly to avoid the detection & subsequent arrest by the rcmp (royal canadian mountain-bike police). why do we do it? some of us are luddites. technophobes. seeking purity of experience through simplification. some seek a more spiritual connection with the trail - feeling every stone; every root beneath our treads. some hardtail fundamentalists believe that rear-suspension users live in fear of reality - they wish to be coddled & isolated from the shocks of the real world. our numbers may be small, but we are strong in our beliefs & unity! hardtail pride!Originally posted by DßR

It's definitely a tradeoff. I'm sure you remember a while back when the ban was instituted, it was actually a response to difficulties in maintaining the acceptable standards expected within the socialized medicine community. Hospitals and doctors were getting overworked. While is does suck, I think the BC community has benefitted in the long run.Originally posted by Transcend

They are able to ride b/c of a loophole. In BC, there is a clause in the HT law that states that a suspension seat post is technically considered a DualieOriginally posted by Lexx D
I'm afraid to comment due to possible flaming.
It can't be true. people ride whistler on hardtails all the time.
my lil' cousin joe wanted to take one of these courses but you need to have parental authorization if your under 21 and they didn't let him...Originally posted by MMike

this is either a sadistically evil force at play that makes Canada hell for people like me who love to ride a HT down a steep chute, or that this is the most elaborate yet late april fool's joke ever.Originally posted by bomberz1qr20
Wait - you guys really aren't kidding?!
You can't legally ride a hardtail on grades 30% or more?? Says who??
HARDTAIL PERMITS???
WTF!!!!!!!!!!?????????????
no way. All it's done is drive the HT riders underground. Now if somebody gets messed up on a ht, they won't dare go get proper medical attention for fear of being busted. WAY worse now, I can't imagine how many dudes have gangrene and shriveled limbs, or worse the dreaded anal SARS.....Originally posted by kidwoo

Yes but the course have become way more advanced, just not safe on a HT anymore.Originally posted by nicklin

I seem to recall that the 1st NS FR bikes were ALL hardtails back in the days when all the BC guys rode were Norcos and Konas with 4" forks because they were so manuevarable.

Oh tell me you don't mean to suggest the Canadian War on Hardtails is a misappropriation of funds simply because of a few deviants who take their safety into their own hands against the law. It's illegal and any loss of life or limb is a direct result of insubordination. Sympathy for outlaws should in no way dictate national policy.Originally posted by Dß

Hey, you can bury your head in the sand all you want. It doesn't change the FACT that this stuff is going on. You beaurocrat-type squares are all the same, you should look at the real world around you!!!!Originally posted by kidwoo
Please. These laws exist for protection of the people. If they were followed, there would be no problems.
