Verizon Android runs a bunch of useless crap in the background. Why oh why can't I just delete this ****? At least on the older OS I could disable it on the command line. Fcuking verizon.

Background processes are alive on all phones, Android just lets you see them.

Don't worry about most of 'em - sleeping processes on Android show as running but they're not consuming any CPU time and little memory.

If they really irk you, root your phone then you can delete 'em.

because you haven't rooted it yet. do that, then you can delete it. i'd recommend just installing ti backup, and just freeze the processes.

And I still don't understand why an iphone can't just take any mp3 and say "set as ringtone". or add an attachment to an email that you are replying to.
That's another thing that keeps me stuck on the Blackberry.

Honestly, the Storm is terrible. I used my friend's Storm once and hated it. The iPhone is much nicer. But, I like my Bold 9000. I really like a real keyboard and I love the versatility.

My wife traded her old BB Curve for an iPhone last year and she loves it. She used to forget her phone at home or lose it in her purse, but now she's always using the iPhone. She does say that she misses being able to customize settings and ringtones.

Her boss converted their office from PC to Macs last year and she says she finds similar issues with Macs. In reality, it probably keeps them running better, though.

5-6 easy steps...How convenient!

I was going to ask how it's done, but then I remembered this great application for the PC called Google.

17 steps here:

26 steps:

Seriously, I will show this to my wife.

How do you root it? I have some worthless crap that came on my Droid X I want to get rid of, like Madden 11 & Blockbuster.
easiest way is z4root. google for the spk file (install for 'droid). you'll need to get an app installer from the android market in order to install it IIRC.

once you have z4 installed, just run the program, and hit the button that says root.

be forewarned, once you root, you may have issues installing carrier supplied updates. there are work arounds, but tend to be more in depth.

I haven't had a BB for a few months and the only thing I've noted in the past few years is their marketshare. They lost their way years ago.

Latest news not good for RIM or Apple:
That article has some valid points and draws on past experience which is fine. However one thing it lacks is a look forward. It does not try to look at what happens with future products and services which can effect all of the conclusions much more than the current state of the market. Apple show best how a device as the Ipad can make big changes. I personally think the platform is much less important and there are potential for a lot of changes in the market, I also think the article needs to apply a world wide view as the US cell phone market as big as it might be is still a small piece of the global market.

At the end of the day I could not care less. I really like my Iphone and cant wait to get my Ipad2 later this month but my brand loyalty is only as good as the next product.

I like how the article last references february and fails completely to mention that the iphone is now in verizon and is suddenly available to what... twice as many customers as of march? I think those figures might change a bit in the coming months.

Also, Syadasti was an RIM homer for the longest. Apple would NEVER pass them bye, but now apparently he just switched teams. And who even cares who has more of the market share? Does the fact that more people buy crap mean something?

latest stats i saw for verizon iphone is that its sales aren't as high as expected, and is being outsold by an HTC device. and has had little overall effect on apple's market share

call me a fanboi, but i think that itunes and apple's "ecosystem" so to speak is what is attracting customers. there will always be geeks who want the openness of android but there will always be people who just want their products to work without having to put much effort into it. my house has almost all apple electronics (3 laptops, couple iphones, couple ipod touches, apple tv, airport extreme, etc. etc.). the thing that will always get me to buy apple products is that they all work seamlessly together. no fuss. sure, android and other systems can be more powerful or "better"; but they don't provide the seamless integration of multiple devices that modern homes/small businesses require.

hence.... the statistic that shows androids market share rising over everyone else, yeah sure, its new and apple already peaked, people who are finally joining the smartphone market are looking for something to try (some may be anti-mac while others may not like at&t). but apple will continue to make ingress into new customer bases and those who became "converts" and arent computer nerds (BV :D) probably wont leave.

Actually I posted in a related thread a few months ago. I'm not metrosexual dramaqueen that needs his own thread declaring I purchased common new product. I never posted a dedicated thread when I bought new computers, cars, etc - I don't need to be validated...especially on a biking forum:rofl:

I rooted when I first got it. Then Froyo hit and the old program didn't work anymore. I'll try Z4, thanks.

Who you crappin' ?

Practically the only time you ever post is to slam some product (apple, toyota, etc.) but Im being "validated" by teasing you with a thread? I could give two sh*ts what you or any person here buys or uses. I could not care less about this board's opinion with regard to which phone I use. I did hate the Blackberry, so I shot it. Thought it'd be funny to start a thread since you were gargling blackberry's ballsack for so long.

Actually I've stated several times over the years I was waiting for my BB to die to ditch RIM since they've fallen behind long ago, I guess you just can't read? Rather than wasting money and making more ewaste, I actually used my phone until it was in bad shape on its second battery. My Pearl lasted me until February (over 3.5 years) when I got an LG Optimus (low-end but bought due to a $25/month unlimited everything plan other than voice 300 minutes - actually $15/month cheaper than my Pearl plan which was unlimited email only with 300 minutes and I have better service overall). Enjoy being screwed by both Apple and the majors carriers with their monopolistic benefits to themselves.

http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3337259&postcount=7

As I said the only thing I've posted is how RIM's marketshare (both in the US and globally - along with Symbian which is also sliding and has been at the top forever) is bigger than everyone else. And I've mentioned again and again smartphones are still a small fraction of total cell phone sales (though that will change just like with any new technology as it get cheaper due to mass adoption).

I'm about to have a superfluous Blackberry. My original intent (make love, not war) was to send it to a politically unstable North African country - there's enough porn on it to start a sexual revolution.

FROM AN YAHOO ARTICLE

It's time for the monthly Android-is-killing-iPhone-no-it's-not-you're-an-idiot-no-you-are-fanboy explosion of blog posts, tweets, manifestos, charts, etc.

Yes, Google Android is beating Apple in market share. Yes, even if the iPod touch is included. Yes, it will likely continue to do so.

So here's how mobile developers should think about it.

1) If you are making free mobile apps, make apps for both iOS and Android.

At this point, it makes sense to develop the apps side-by-side, with the same features, available for both iOS and Android at the same time.

Android is too big to ignore completely, but not big enough to be your only platform. You may wish to support multiple Android app stores, such as Amazon's.

There is no reason for your iPhone app to be better than your Android app. There is no reason for your Android app to get more attention than your iPhone app. They should both be good.

2) If you are trying to make money selling apps, prioritize Apple for now.

Yes, Android has more users, but iOS users are more likely to pay for apps and in-app purchases. MLB.com CEO Bob Bowman told us last month that MLB At Bat -- a $15 app -- sells 5 times more iPhone copies than Android. We've heard of 10-to-1 iOS to Android sales ratios for other premium apps.

Part of it is the people who own the phone, part of it is how well Apple runs its app store vs. Google's, etc.

You may want to make an identical version of the paid app for Android, or figure out a way to make a free version for Android, just to be on the platform.

3) If you are designing mobile web sites, make sure they work well on both platforms.

And some of the other platforms, like BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7. It isn't hard.

4) If your mobile apps talk to a server, make sure you can add new app platforms to the server whenever you want.

There's no reason it should only support iOS or Android or anything.

5) For tablets, iPad is your priority.

There's no reason to prioritize Android 3.0 Honeycomb yet, or RIM PlayBook. They aren't selling very many yet. Eventually, they might, so it's not a bad idea to test, and make sure your website works on Honeycomb and PlayBook. You can add apps later.

This could change eventually, but mobile apps generally have a 3-month to 1-year planning cycle, so there's no need to get ahead of yourself. Let us know if there's anything we're missing.

After about 3 weeks with my HTC EVO 4G with Android 2.2, I honestly don't know how I settled on anything else beforehand. Incredible, incredible phone. with the 32gb card in there, it's conveniently combined my gps, Zune and phone all in 1 unit. Awesome.

Gartner's worldwide projections are out...

Gartner Says Android to Command Nearly Half of Worldwide Smartphone Operating System Market by Year-End 2012

Egham, UK, April 7, 2011- Worldwide smartphone sales will reach 468 million units in 2011, a 57.7 percent increase from 2010, according to Gartner Inc. By the end of 2011, Android will move to become the most popular operating system (OS) worldwide and will build on its strength to account for 49 percent of the smartphone market by 2012 (see table 1)

"By 2015, 67 percent of all open OS devices will have an average selling price of $300 or below, proving that smartphones have been finally truly democratized," said Roberta Cozza, principal analyst at Gartner.

"As vendors delivering Android-based devices continue to fight for market share, price will decrease to further benefit consumers", Ms. Cozza said. "Android's position at the high end of the market will remain strong, but its greatest volume opportunity in the longer term will be in the mid- to low-cost smartphones, above all in emerging markets."

Gartner predicts that Apple's iOS will remain the second biggest platform worldwide through 2014 despite its share deceasing slightly after 2011. This reflects Gartner's underlying assumption that Apple will be interested in maintaining margins rather than pursuing market share by changing its pricing strategy. This will continue to limit adoption in emerging regions. iOS share will peak in 2011, with volume growth well above the market average. This is driven by increased channel reach in key mature markets like the U.S. and Western Europe.

Fixed.
