I run a double 36/26 with a 10-42 cassette on one of my mtb's. I want the extra bit of range high and low versus 12 speed.

My old legs want more range than any 1x offers.
Shimano XT m8000 (11speed) was available with a 2x front and you could get non dinner plate sized cassettes. I have the 1x m8000 on two bikes and IMO it's better than their 9 speed offerings. i think they still offer 2x on other tiers, unlike sram they haven't completely done away with it. might be a challenge to source.
