Swept bars, 27.5 x 2.35”, Avid mechanical disk brakes, SRAM 11 or 12 (would have preferred Shimano 2 x 9)

Do you have actual practical experience with 2x drive trains? Not 3x, 2x.

Why not like a shimano 11 or 12 with a e13 helix? Pretty nice, and more robust (far less finicky) than SRAM.

My old legs want more range than any 1x offers.

511% is a lot… Just run a smaller front and (extremely) occasionally spin out at top speed.

I run a double 36/26 with a 10-42 cassette on one of my mtb's. I want the extra bit of range high and low versus 12 speed.

My old legs want more range than any 1x offers.

Shimano XT m8000 (11speed) was available with a 2x front and you could get non dinner plate sized cassettes. I have the 1x m8000 on two bikes and IMO it's better than their 9 speed offerings. i think they still offer 2x on other tiers, unlike sram they haven't completely done away with it. might be a challenge to source.
