I was. I dropped out of that when I realized I wasn't as passionate about it as I thought I was. I spent the last few years wrenching on bikes. I'm planning on starting school for mechanical engineering next semester. Hopefully I can land a job in a few years designing bikes and/or parts.

You're in a good area for it. If you keep an eye out those positions come up. I had trouble finding anything too serious on the east coast. If your school has a machine shop, use that to build parts for yourself. Create and retain design drawings for everything you do and you'll end up with free parts, good experience, and a killer work portfolio.
