In the cleavage of the Tetons
Today’s gem.
Can’t wait to see where it goes.

“This is somewhat of a cross post from the So. Cal. section:

I thought I’d share the stupidity with you guys. Maybe I’ll get lucky and this effing idiot will read this. Sometimes I take a short connector trial from Felton Street, up over the hill and onto Potrero Road before I go down into Sycamore Canyon, in Newbury Park. It’s a pretty non technical, sometimes flowy trail with a couple steep rocky sections. Today I decided to take a short ride, and ride over to Potrero and then ride it back to Felton. On the way back I came around a corner before the steepest rockiest section and there was a guy riding a mountain bike, pulling his son up the trail with a motorcycle tie down. His son was on a small kids mountain bike. Dad was on his right side of the trail, his son was on my side of the trail with the tie down spanning the middle of the trail. I wasn’t going fast. But, it was steep enough that I wasn’t going to be able to stop in time. Luckily there was enough room on the right that I was able to counter steer my way around the kid. And, then I hear, “you fucking asshole”. The first thing I thought was, what in the world did I do wrong? The second was, if I stop and engage this idiot, I’ll end up kicking his ass right in front of his kid. Which honestly, dad fully deserved, but the kid didn’t. So, I didn’t say a word and just kept going. Then, I thought about the mess it would have caused if I wasn’t able to get around the kid. I would have gone through the tie down, over the bars, dragging both of them down the hill. It wouldn’t have been pretty. And, a mile away is the paved and wide Black ***** hill in Sycamore Canyon that he could have towed his son up and down. I mean, I thought I had seen it all until today.”

In the bathroom, fighting a battle
For the record, that's my neighborhood (I live right off Felton) but I was in no way involved in this incident. I have no idea why one would ride that section for pleasure, it's only utility is as a way to get from one trail to another, and even then I tend to skip it and just ride on the road. All parties involved were probably on e-bikes.

People around here are indeed idiots. The exemplify my hatred of the "grow the sport" mantra everybody is on about. I've been singing the gospel of golf to anybody who will listen, mountain biking is so 1997, get yourselves some polo shirts, a set of clubs and hit the links, golf is a waaaaay cooler sport.

mountain biking is so 1997
There are now millions of dollars behind the idea that modern trail bike (eNdUrO bIkEs) are somehow completely different than what existed 20-30 years ago allowing people to ride things that have never been ridden before...........all while also building the lamest tamest bullshit on the ground in history. I had to pull out a bunch of old pictures to show a forest service recreation specialist that yes, we did in fact ride trail bikes and even hardtails on the shit he rides in downieville now. He really was under the impression that this rugged terrain was only possible with modern bikes.

I think it's too late. The grand rolling machines have already been released on the sidewalks. There's no going back.

I don't doubt that THEY are riding things that THEY have never ridden before. But you know as well as anyone that lots of shit getting ridden now was just ridden by fewer idiots. People have always looked for off the radar things to ride.

And electric bikes weren't what I was talking about. They're not legally allowed on the places usually discussed......and certainly not with a USFS employee.

This has been a big issue locally, and indeed the trail incident in the OP likely would never have likely happened without the assistance of batteries. That trail is just too damn steep in many sections to tow a kid through, and most of us burrito powered cyclists bypass it because it's a boring trail not worth the effort. Solid chance neither party every rode prior to ebikes, or at least haven't ridden since Bush was in office.

The tech stuff has gotten less tech because it's more accessible, fitness is a barrier to entry for a lot of trails around here, or at least it was. Those newer riders either drag brakes all over the place or worse read that they need to grab a shovel and "fix" the trails to pay their dues to the sport they've loved for the last 7 months.

More like riding up things they have never ridden. ThEy aren’t going down anything that they wouldn’t before.

Yes I remember riding some windrock shit back in the day on my Azonic steel head. It was dumb as hell but I got down it. Although it is significantly moar funner on my super gay 29er endurbro bike. Although I dont wear a fanny pack, so I’m not sure if it’s enduro or just trail.

The example I used was specifically a long 14 mile shuttle descent. And again, the discussion was not about ebikes.

So no, that's not what I meant.

"the sport" is full of people new to mountainbiking, riding down things they would have never though possible, don't have any institutional history to draw from, and are being told the only reason that's happening is because of the hellahella new capable enduro bike they just bought. And they believe it.

The ebike discussion is something different and is not what I was talking about.

SS worlds 2002 had a fair number of rigid bikes in that zone seemingly handling the tech just fine.

I happened to come across those guys because I didn't know that was going on that day. Lots of motherfuckers sitting at the top of that hill waiting for the ambulance to come pick them up and give them IVs after the climb too ;)

At least they were drinking beer in the meantime making do with what was available.

Exactly though. A friend of mine's brother in law started riding around 2015 or so. He legitimately thinks he's doing a new sport because "enduro" bikes are a new thing that didn't exist previously. And he's so god damn arrogant about it because his ego needs to believe he's on the forefront of something. It's nuts.

Ha! I was one of them but passed on swilling during the ride. Met Chuck Ibis on the chunky decent while we were picking our way through some walkers. Good times. Yeah, today's 'bikes' are fun, plastic n'all. Maybe the plastic brings out the plastic in the rider as well? Whatever happened to bringing oneself up to a challenge as opposed to throwing $$ at it? Been a climber most of my life and it is just akin to folks french-freeing something and calling it climbing.... plastic

NORCAL is the hizzle
the crew I'm talking about was the "I give up" pile on packer saddle waiting for a ride back. Just sitting there looking defeated, made infinitely worse by the fact that they were all dressed like roadies in spandex.

If you did the descent you weren't the group I saw.
WTF? Make it to the top and get a ride down? AKA, survive the miserable part and skip the good stuff?

you climb a singlespeed to the the saddle and see how you feel

I ain't doing that shit. It's bad enough with gears. I happily take those shuttles so I have strength for the smash. I would absolutely be in that pile. Just less spandex.

Now take into account this is the singlespeed world champs and there are probably some georgians and equivalent in that mix
