Bit late coming back to the party.
Weather around here has not be conducive to riding a big bike on clay covered oil shale.
Especially when the hill is north facing, takes a couple of sunny days with some breeze to dry back to rideable.

However I was able to sneak in a day of test and tune runs before a light 20 minute shower closed most of the fun stuff...

27.5 front wheel on a 26" frame is GOOD, or at least on mine.
Rollover, and speed is incredible.
Loose shale chunks that used to sap speed with the 26" - roll right over and instead of slowing down, I was maintaining and in a couple of spots felt like gaining.
Corners felt a bit weird at first - body placement felt odd.
Berms ended up fine after a few runs.
Natural nasty rooted downhill corners need a bit of work - not quite got that down, still feels a bit naf.

If you are on a Marzocchi 888 or 380 and are at 200lbs or above - you NEED to be on the X-Firm spring, no if ands or buts. Just do it - you can thank me later. (Note this is with the volume adjuster removed and 120ml in the spring side. and a custom shim stack done by Alex at Zoke in Canada - He is now with SuspensionWerx in Vancouver. FYI)
During my cut short test and tune session I ended up Taking a couple of clicks of compression out, added a click or rebound.
Fork stays high in the travel, great mid support, does what it has to do then comes up to sit high in the travel.
Small bump is well, you know how good, mid is now firm with lots of support.
The only thing I don't like is the rebound. It is still meh.

Next step will be to put in the Andreani / Ohlins piston and shims. This is a new designed piston with much larger ports. It adds shimmed rebound and a choice of two compression stacks. The new shimstacks do use some of the original shims, so you do have a bit of leeway for tuning with the spares.
Will try the stock "Hard" shim stack to start. Hoping it is good, otherwise a call to Alex for some advice on reshimming will be necessary.

I wanted to do the wheel / spring separate from the piston/shim upgrade. Kind of want to know what changes are affecting what while on the trail

cheers

Replaced an XSpusion rv1, got a deal on a new take off boxxer team, then added the solo air spring. I wouldn't say it's as smooth as they coil but man it sure is light. I do like the way it rides and really like being able to fine tune the air spring.

longer? lower? more fork? .....plus tires?

what's the reasoning for the new BTR?
Longer/lower/slacker. I think the short fork makes tons of sense on a hardtail, because the geometry doesn't change so wildly as it goes through the travel. Plus tires, I'm not even going to start on :D

Opening beer, you don't need another beer, although that will work; don't limit yourself
If you can't pop a top with a lighter, seatbelt, rock or stick etc, then it is time to hand in the man-card, . That is if you somehow got one issued that is....:disgust1:

Any trip to the PVD website should be limited to the suspension oil viscosity data page ONLY.
Failure to heed this advice may result in burned retinas, and a mental recursion feedback loop. Basically you will be reduced to a blankly staring catatonic state constantly uttering Wha da fuq over and over whilst drooling upon yourself.
You have been warned.

I've been using his brake fluid resource for a while now. Pentiosin 7.1 chf has worked great in my shimano brakes. Although now you can get their brake fluid for less than unreasonable prices.

Otherwise...what the practical fuck?

Fresh cranks and fancy seals on the fork. 4 day warranty turnaround on the cranks. Pret-ty good.

New Ergon grips for shizzes and gizzles and new XTR trail brakes on warranty. The new brakes are AMAZING. For now...

Also, I've reduced my tire pressures and have managed to not destroy my wheels yet. 20ish front, 23ish rear. Such a huge difference.

I need new shock hardware as my DU bushings are lasting only a handful of rides, and my chainring is starting to drop chains. It's well into its second year, so probably due. I'll be going with a Oneup switch 30t for now.

When my cassette/chain are due for replacement, I'll go with a Sunrace 11-46, and upsize to a 32t. I got plans...

The main thing I notice is the lack of outer lock ring. My ruffians were always polished... didn't make much sense to not have grip/padding out at the end of the bar. Size wise, they're similar, so I like 'em. I think they're also a little bit squishier. Overall, I'd take them over Ruffians from now on.

Shock hardware is still as hard to get as chicken teeth.

Tuned the dropper but was too lazy to replace my shifter cable housing.

Ready for some Bicycling

Who counts while they are riding?
I do, but only because my Garmin has a "beers earned" data field.

Sweet Optic btw, I like the look and numbers on those things. My future XC bike choices are that, a smuggler or a Process 111.

Thanks man, but that is the Sight. I am running it at 150 front and 130 rear. It pedals well and reminds me of the Scout with a longer ETT. But with the bigger wheels, it will smash through shit as well. Fun ride so far.

Oh right. Doh. More like the Trek Fuel EX kind of bike I guess. What does it weigh in at? Sounds like a great do-nearly-everything bike
