I'd like to know what riders are racing World CUp on tires not made by Maxxis. Who are they and how are they doing?

For example, I saw pics of Gee Athertons bike sporting Continentals - but were those just for show or did he actually race on them?

Is anybody on Michelin this year? With them revamping their tire lineup for next year we can see what the 2011 Maxxis line will look like too.

What about Hutchinson? They have some pretty good lookin' meats this year. Are they being used on the World Cup?

Just noticed the pile of DH Mud 3s in the background though. Maybe they've used up all of their Comp 16s? I hope we'll see them on next year's tires soon.

Naw, they definitely just do that because Michelin told them too if they are not actually going to be running them...:busted:

Oh and you might have already seen, but Mick is actually using Kenda's...

Yep and I sw that photo of Gee's bike with dirt covered Contis, Looks like he actually runs those in races. I might try them myself once I run out of Michelins.

Those new Contis (Kaisers and whatever else) make some pretty bold claims. They reckon the rubber compound they use offers 25% more grip than "their competitors"... if that's anywhere near true, that's a massive difference. Would have sworn I saw that mentioned in their descriptions on CRC the other day, but it doesn't appear to be there now. Damn.

Edit: it was actually 30% more grip they're claiming over their previous rubber compounds, check it here http://www.conti-online.com/generator/www/de/en/continental/bicycle/general/innovation/blackchili_en.html

Big claims... either that or their previous compounds just sucked.

I've seen a couple of the Kaisers and other new Conti's here. They look and feel different than anything else, guys riding them seem to love them. We'll see.

So anybody got any good tire pics from the last two races? Did Gee run Contis? Did anybody run Michelins?

I'm psyched to see Hill running actual Specialized tires. Competition in the tire market can only be good for us.

Littemag has a pic of Team Kenda's Mitch Delfs on Minions.

Kenda should hand over the entire sponsorship bankroll to Mick Hannah.....anyone have proof he hasn't run Kenda this year.....?

All of his race shots show him running kendas, so unless he stopped half way down and changed his tire, he's on kendas.

Did anyone catch what tires were used in Maribor this weekend? Did Gee and Rach run Rain Kins or Sharpie Screams?

the rainkings are definetly no pure mud tire, the wetscreams are for the really nasty stuff much better suited, like this weekend in maribor.
i used the rainkings front and rear throught this spring with a lot of wet or semi-dry grounds and the tire is awesome!!!! i can't recommend it enough, it really is good!!
the compound grips unbelievably good in wet and intermediate conditions. i even used it on dry, rocky terrain (out of curiousity, because it already offers so much grip in the wet..), where it proved to be grippy, but a bit slow, with high rolling resistence more showing.
a kind of "spring" or "autumn" tire, when things are wet and slippery, but no specialist mud tire.

Sam Hill and Brendog seem to really be digging the tires Specialized has been making for them.
That makes sense seeing as nearly every Specialized tire is a damn close copy of Maxxis tires.

We've been getting really big into finding out how every tire we sell performs lately so the shop ordered some of the Clutch, and Storm tires that we will try through out the year. We have some Chunders in stock and we'll use those as well. 3 of us at the shop have been testing a ton of different tires lately and seem to use the standard DHF/DHR combo as a reference point. After we each get some more time in dry conditions I'll post up our views.

Thanks for the input. I'd be scared to see what Conti comes up with for a pure mud tire...

That soft eh? I'd love to give em a shot.
I have no idea about the Kaisers et al, but their XC tires kick all kinds of ass. The Race Kings in particular are really f'ing awesome. I'd expect good things. I may try a pair at some point, though my current (as of yet untested) experiment is with Geax Neurons.

I've got to fondle the new Michelin Comp 32 (formerly 2.8), now in a 2.6. Knob spacing, size, etc is what has been asked for by us riders for many years. The DH3mud is pretty similar to it's previous rendition. Comp 16 2.5, identical.

But all have a very much upgraded sidewall.

Edit: Point being, they're having trouble just getting their US pros onto them for the time being. It's more likely you'll see Frenchies on them before you'll see anybody else. (said in the voice of Napoleon Dynamite's brother)

Maxxis must be making all these tires then, huh?

Tread pattern is only a part of the tire design. Sidewall, ply layup, tpi, compound, and shape all come in to play. I'm pretty sure I could design a mud tire tread pattern and it would look much like any of the above.

Side knobs. Check.
Outer grove. Check.
Open center knobs. Check.

That was pretty easy.

Just because the tread looks some what the same doesn't mean they are damn near copies.
