My buddy just got a 04-05 Bullit with a 5th Element. He weights 210-220. What spring rate and settings on the 5th should he start at? Ive never owned a 5th and he has no clue.
I know alot of you have owned or own a bullit. Help
If he uses that Bullit as an all-around bike, a 550lbs spring should be a good match so the bike can be pedaled decently. If he's mainly into downhill/freeride, he should be looking at a 500lbs.
The best base settings I've found on that bike is:
- Beginning stroke compression 1/2 turn from fully in
- Ending stroke compression in the middle, then open a 1/2 turn out
- Rebound on the slow side of things
- Pressure around 110psi, probably 125psi would be best for a big guy like him
- Volume 1/2 turn from fully out
That should provide a lively bike that will stick to the ground comfortably but with enough pop-up for spirited riding and hoping everywhere.
tHe stock 5th elements use seemingly too low spring rates but they just work like that. When I upgraded my old Intense M1 to 5th from a blown RC, I went from a 700lb spring to a 350. Hey it worked.

04....I think they advertised around 170mm travel for those years(2nd gen Bullits) but ended up being(I think) 6.75 inches of travel with a 8.5x2.5 shock and a little more with 8.75x2.75. If he is 220 I would go with the 425 first.
the 9x3 shocks work(I heard) but I would suggest checking the tire clearance on the seat tube first, since removing the shuttle means that the shock ending stroke is a half inch more forward than with the 2.5 inch stroke shock.
425 *should* be enough since the 240 lb weight needs aroudn 400, but all the disclaimers apply(YMMV, may vary with riding style, yada yada yada)
I have an 03 and the 425 lb. spring is what i run and i'm 190.
At 220 your guy should be running at least the 425 and possibly a 500 lb like Pat said.
I'm pretty sure you can run fox and manitou springs on the 5th.
