These terms originated from cold war era definitions, which no longer fit.
1st world were the developed, capitalist nations
2nd world were the developed communist bloc nations
3rd world were poor people

long ago i 've read something about the topic, there is a whole school/theory to that on subconscious association based on constant exposure to a certain notion.
it said there are some subreptitious values associated with "made in the usa" or "foes" or "dolce & gabbana", though this values can be made up, but as long as they are socially accepted and valued, they are valuable to the buyer.
given equal performance, similar styling and equal price, most people would prefer an italian sports car over a czech sports car too.
i'm with Jon on this, i'd rather have a rider who knows how a bike is needed to be, then some guy that knows how to weld but doesn't get the concept of the suspension or something..
