I have a box of those dual rotor disc brakes here if anyone wants to try them-prepare to die though ;). My wife ended up using them longer than anyone else, which was a stupid move, she crashed more that season than any other.
We never put grease on them, just rubbed a little oil on fingers and coated both outer rotors before EVERY run.
There are a few pics of them if you get real bored.

I was out back east somewhere in eastern Tenn. and bumped into this little bike shop museum. Poked my head inside and it was someone's collection of old bikes including this one.
Figured it belongs in this thread as it did go DH only....albeit on asphalt.

I always liked the look of the original Balfa NR. The paintjob on this one leaves something to be desired but I remember seeing the green and black one in the DH bike shootout in MBAction (circa 1998) when I was first getting into downhill and thinking it was the coolest thing ever.

I agree that was a pretty impressive bike. Good call.

I never saw one in person. :(

Homemade CNC madness from Sweden, built around 97.

It's really crazy!
hey,

that s seriously old school...

i think back in 98 or 99 Jan Lundman used to race a "homemade" steel frame with 24 x 3.0 inch nokians in nevegal. A few month later he was still racing the same frame in Kaprun (rusty by now) , paired with the rst upside down fork to a top 5 result...

Is Johan Engstroem actually still around/racing?

yo, think about this riddle...(unless someone else has already mentioned it). what about in 10 or 20 years when we figure out new and better ways to design suspension...a. what are those gonna look like...and b. how are we gonna be lookin at the babies we're ridin now?

that thing is amazing. It definatley defines that time in mt. biking. Is that a Mountain Cycle disc brake? I've never seen one in person, always wondered how they mounted them before disc tabs were standard.

Anyone have a pic of Myles boulder bike (I think that was the name) I saw him in durango with it, had the head tube shock AND a rockshox, was first long travel front end of its time and was a REAL roach-but he hauled his young, nor cal ass on it.

Here's a Giant proto DH frame from ~2000 - 2001. They eventually decided to go with the other design, single-pivot with a linkage-actuated shock, but this thing was pretty cool.
The front triangle was Myles' backup test frame, and I got the swingarm/etc from the folks up in Canada when their test front end cracked.
It's really smooth, with a slightly rearward axle path, so it really sucks up the square-edged bumps. It's pretty damn heavy though, and I'd like to ride it with a "real" rear shock, if I ever decide to build it up again. I have a set of Myles' old Mavic/Michelin "Le System" wheels to put on it too, so it'll be a cool old-school machine.

Dropouts:

Linkage, note the AC chainguide mounts:

Another view, 100mm BB shell. Big gussets welded on because the other tubing is so narrow. Also note the horrible paint job, red overspray onto the yellow. The ATX DH frames all had that issue:

wow a big change between the designs for that year. I used to have a 2001 dh team with that exact paint job. Then i went and saw a powdercoater.

This was an interim design, I guess it was being tested at the same time as the DH Team models, and they decided to go with the other design. Personally, with some tweaking, I think this could have been a pretty damn sweet rig. I used it as my backup bike when I did the Big Bear 12 hour DH race with some coworkers. Think I'm going to try to get it built back up for Northstar this summer...
I kinda dig the super-ugly paint. I have a matching Fox team jersey too, with the red/yellow/purple, super fugly. I used to have Fox pants too, but they've been lost in the sands of time.

I remember Dan showing me that bike back when I worked at Onza- those white Porcs lasted about one ride if you were lucky- they were sooo soft....

and after powder coat and some upgrades

willing to let the frame go for cheap if anyone is interested. i cracked one of the chain stay arms but it should be an easy fix.

Trying to find some skillz...
I had one of those Giants too. It was one of my favorite bikes, although I remember the guide being a PITA. I had a 7" Monster T with Head 45A rims and 2.7 Mobsters on mine. The wheels looked like they belonged on a mx bike.

That bike was a tank - in a good way.

From left to right : Nolan 100% CNC thing, old karpiel, some "onion" single pivot monstrosity, Cannondale dual shock attempt, Gary fisher RS-1 rebadged (or Fisher rebadged someone elses' creation?)

(Nolan here for whoever it was that requested it, had far better pics of that thing around somewhere though)
