Had you been using boots or did it get ripped off when the crank failed? I’ve got maybe 700 days on a five year old set of Next SL cranks that have always hod boots on them. So far so good.

I think the boots are just to color-match the cranks to the bike. If they were cereal, they'd be hard delrin, carbon fiber, etc...
