Curious.
Do it in the wintertime. Freeze the water in a cookie sheet and drill pairs of holes in it. Use long 1 1/2 inch construction staples and attach it to the tree trunk.
I was thinking more along the lines of... if you use a staple, at least a few thousand molecules of water would be trapped/blind to/be forced to absorption into the bark by the staple.
