you know once a cat leaves your property its not your cat anymore.
The American Association of Feline Practitioners agrees that people who let their cats freely roam are assholes
Veterinarians are encouraged to educate clients and the public concerning the dangers associated with allowing cat's free-roam access to the outdoors.

Free-roaming cats may be exposed to injury, suffering, and death from:
  • Vehicles
  • Attacks from other animals
  • Human cruelty
  • Poisons
  • Traps
Additionally, these cats have an increased potential to be exposed to feline-specific and zoonotic diseases.

Lastly, adherence to this policy also reduces predation of native wildlife populations, a goal and policy of the AVMA and the AAFP.
See also: http://www.catvets.com/guidelines/position-statements/free-roaming-abandoned-and-feral-cats

The AAFP strongly supports reducing
the numbers of unowned, free-roaming,
abandoned and feral cats through humane
capture (with placement in homes where
appropriate) by local health departments,
humane societies and animal control
agencies in accordance with local and
state ordinances.
State and local agencies are
encouraged to promote public policies
that:
-
Require rabies vaccination for all cats.
-
Require sterilization of all cats adopted
from humane organizations and animal
control agencies, wholesale and retail
pet suppliers.
-
Require sterilization of privately owned
cats prior to sale or adoption if they are
not intended for breeding.
-
Require microchip identification of
all owned cats (2008 AAFP Position
Statement on Identification of Cats)
Require keeping owned cats indoors,
in an outdoor enclosure, or on an
attended leash (2007 AAFP Position
Statement on Confinement of Owned
Indoor Cats).
-
Prevent the establishment of managed
cat colonies in areas where cats pose a
threat to protected wildlife.
-
Prohibit the abandonment of cats.

Housecats are terrible for farmers too, your story is outdated and dangerous. Thankfully most farmers aren't as dumb these days.

Rodents hunt cats and that's why there's a false perception they're good at hunting them. Their brains are altered in such a way that they're sexually attracted to cat odors:

Cats contaminate meat - both in farms and wild game:

They also make people crazy over 1/3 of all of humanity is infected thanks to housecats:

Australians aren't as dumb as Americans, they're doing something about it:

And it goes beyond destroying the native bird life, rodents, and herpes on land:

My dog while off leash chased a cat once. Someone got in my face that my dog should be on a leash. I asked why it was OK for the cat to be off leash. Silence.

My own world inside my head
The idea of a neighborhood cat is that I get a cat, everyone in the neighborhood becomes responsible for it.

Cross post from Eric's Robin Hood thread.

Not graphic, but sensitive cat people and children should not click. The vet lost her job and possibly her license.

She is losing her license, she will also be facing jail time, and restitution to the family that owned the car. Back story a lot are not getting is that is was found to be a pet, and in the photo you see the cats back leg trying to come up, indicating the cat was still alive.

Any actual bow hunter knows you just do not take head shots because of such things. She is a disgrace to the animal care community, and bow hunters.
