Well our team riders just received their DH whelsets for 2009 and these have to be some of the lightest wheels I have seen for DH.

Specs are Stan's ZTR Flow UST rims, Hope Pro 2 Hubs laced with double butted spokes. Weights include presta vavle and rim strips.


Front- 850 grams Rear-975 grams

We tested these rims late in the season last year and were impressed enough to go ahead and race on them this season.

Very nice. Weight is amazing. How's the durability of the rims? Closer to 721's or DTs? ;)

I have been running close to the same set up for a couple seasons on my Splinter. The rims hold up pretty good as long you run enough pressure and some downhill meat around them. But if you are the type of rider that goes through a few 6.1's a season these aren't your rim... the metal is thinner on the flows, but its a stronger profile.

Here are the specs on mine:
Stans ZTR Flow 32H rims laced to Hope Pro II hubs, 12mm rear, 20mm front with DT Swiss SuperComp spokes and alloy nipples, 800g front, 905g rear = 1705g for the wheelset (no valves or rim strips included)

I just built up a set too! After reading Trancends' blog.

Stans flow ZTR
Hope pro II (20mm/150mm)
DT Comp 2.0 spokes
DT alloy nipples
Maxxis High roller 3c's

Can't wait to hit the hill. I assume I will have to push myself to be a smoother rider. Im actually not all that rough on wheels.

If you don't go through rims often with other wheelsets, you should be fine with the flows.

Depends on your defintion of durable really. I found that when I dented the FLOW, it was an instant flat and usually followed by a new rim. Great AM rim, and possibly DH rim for smooth or slower-going heavily wooded racing. Based on personal experience over the passed two years for aggressive AM descending though, they probably wouldn't be my first choice for fast rocky racing. It'd rolling the dice every race run, and I just don't roll like that :P

I've had nothing but great luck with the Flow's. I'm running them on a 6" AM bike, but everyone I roll with has DH bikes and rides as such. I have to work hard to keep up with my friends so those rims take quite a beating. The low sidewalls don't dent as easily as other lighter rims, I'm guessing because they are much lower. There are no eyelets, but I've had no cracking or any stress marks.

Overall I am stoked.

Hmm, I may ahve to give these a try. I knew they were lighter than EX823s (what isn't) but didn't realise they were THAT much lighter!

I have exactly the same wheels but with EX823 rims and the weights are 1066/1186 = 2252. 550g/1.2lb of extra rotational weight compared to yours!

You say no rim strip included - is a rimstrip needed, i.e. does the rim have holes in it like a "normal" rim?

How do you find inflating tyres? Easier/harder compared to mavic UST (if you've used them).


edit: done some sums and I think your scales must be a little off.

My weights:
32 DT supercomp spokes 159
32 alloy nipples 10
Hope pro2 front/rear (20mm/150x12mm) 172/295

Stan claims 470g for his rims, though I believe 480 is more common. Your weights suggest that your rims are 459 (front) and 441 (rear). I can just about believe the front, but you've been very lucky (or not!) with the rear one if it's really that far under the normal weight!!

i have found that they inflate much much easier than mavics ust stuff. im currently running the flow rims with kenda nevegal tires. with a little bit of soapy water on the bead when inflating they pop right up almost instantly.

as for durrability these rims have seemed great. i have had zero problems with them and i am running them on both of my downhill bikes. im planning on building another set for this season.

Seb - they include the valve and yellow rim tap. When you purchase them retail, they also include a rubber rimstrip with valve for certain special situations. I haven't used the strip yet. The yellow tape seems to have worked perfectly.

The weights should be very close. I used my Ultimate Support Alpine scale it should be within 5 or 10g per wheel (not sure which it is for that scale).
The difference in the rear wheel is that my hub is a 12 x 135 and yours is a 12 x 150. I didn't get a chance to write down all the individual weights on my tenth of a gram scale for these, think they were built in '07.

You buy the Flow rims and Stans yellow tape, valves, and rim strips separately. Stans rims just need one layer of yellow tape and a valve to go tubeless.

That was the same thread where some toolbag said that Hope Pro 2s were "pretty crappy" and "you get what you pay for". I'd consider the source. :crazy:

The time I had on these so far (last season) was pretty good. No visible dents, dings, flatspots etc. For reference, I usually go through 2 pairs of 721s a season. If I can get that out of these, I will be more than happy as the tubeless setup is super simple and they way dramatically less.

Okay here's a dumb question... can these rims run tubeless with non UST tires? Or do you need to buy UST compatible tires? I'm thinking that these would be perfect for my AM ride.

You can run them tubeless with regular tires or UST tires. The UST tires seal up a little better, they don't bubble out latex when 1st inflated. Regular tires seal up because of the Stans latex sealant (usually have to use more sealant with these).

How many George Washingtons are they?

I'm in the market for new wheels, I have been on Sun rims since 2004 and I am not impressed with how easy it is to get good dents in them. I think I have had 2 front wheels and 3 rear.

2 front wheels and 3 rears in 5 years? I'd say that's pretty durable. Definitely not something to complain about.

You guys are a little slow to catch on. 2 years on these rims, the 07 set is still kicking too. Current set has 15g bladed ws spokes. Not sure I'd do that again in the rear as you can notice some flex. Awesome wheelset though. I have had great luck with the standard tubeless 2.5 minions and the yellow tape/ 6g valve. But some people are just hard on wheels and should only be allowed heavy arse rims.

I've had my ZTR rims a few weeks now, holding up well so far, including the Maxxis Cup at the rock-city known as Vigo. Running them tubeless and have one small ding from where a tyre burped on me and I kept riding with crazy low pressure. I had the pressures too low in the first place though, hence the burping. Recommended.

So, what would be the weight of ZTR Flows (including all small parts) + AmClass rear DH and DT 240s 20mm + light spkes?

Mine are 860 front, 875 rear. With the DT hub that'd be 810 front and 875 rear. That's using DT supercomp spokes/nips, and doesn't include any rimtape/strip/valve etc. (57g each for the rimstrip, a couple of grams if you go for tape, and valve 5g or so).

HAVE YOU SEEN HOW EXPENSIVE THE DT FRONT HUB IS THOUGH?? Ho-leeeeeeeeeeeee! Pro2 all the way, 6-9g heavier and 1/4 of the cost (in the UK).

Seb, few questions for you:

Does the rim (the one with a ding) still seals ok with a tubeless tyre?

Well certainly the same tyre is still on and isn't leaking air. The ding is pretty minor, I'm not concerned.

Rimstrip weight might include valve, I'm not sure TBH, I didn't weight it (but I trust the guy who did). Is 5g really going to make or break your buying decision? If so you're worse than me and need help! :D

To answer your question it will not make or break my decision but I like being well informed. I guess this is a side effect of the industry in which I am working.

Now that the Hopes have become about 10 g heavier the DTs have a weight advantage of nearly 20 g. If this is worth 4-times the money....you decide.
