Why is it some people think that it is alright to mooch, steal, or "reappropriate" other people's electricity, internet connection or other easily pilfered commodities?

I'm sorry you went to graduate school and didn't get a scholarship.
But you made that choice.
I'm sorry you didn't have the balls or the brains to join the military to get that paid.
But again, you made a choice.

"Borrowing" is stealing when you never bring it back.
Boosting someone's internet connection is theft.

Out of all the people I truly and deeply loathe to the point of absolute hatred in this world, and trust me, my heart is filled to the brim with hate, mooches and thieves are #1 on the list.

I despise them more then the DUI who killed my family members.
More then the guy who shot me.
More then GWB.

You are the lowest form of human.
Go sit on the corner and mooch quarters with a sign, at least then I could spit on you.

if they're stealing your internet (wireless, I'm presuming) then its your own fault for letting them. Its called a "password" and its not that hard to implement.

Stealing someone's electricity is pretty hard to do in a non-obvious way. If it's done in an obvious way, again, your own fault for not noticing.

Let me guess dirt, someone hopped on your wifi, looked up some kiddie porn, now the feds are knocking at your door?

I hate thieves as well. It's just low.

I disagree with the wireless thing. I don't mind if someone hops on my WAP to check their email or whatever. It costs me virtually nothing. P2P leeches can **** off however.

Sorry, just raving like a loon because my internals are coming out the back door.

There are always ways around passwords. I have six to get into my wireless. Makes it complicated.

However, some folk on the Monkey think its alright due to their choices to steal from other people, and we're not talking bread or apples to survive on. Internet access, electricity, etc, are not rights, they're items of privilege.

People need to learn to pay their own way in life. It makes me sick.

There's a difference between hopping on to check and get off and using it to upload, or having the balls to think it should always be there for you.

I pay for my internet.
I pay for my gas.
I pay for all of the things I use because I've been around mooches.
I would hate to do that to someone I knew, even if I was starving.
I would fear doing it to someone I didn't know, people tend to react poorly.

Furthermore, if they were using it all the time, wouldn't you want them to kick in a little, or at least ask your permission? There's a huge difference between hopping on something without asking and doing the right thing and going to the person who's stuff you're using.

What next? My car didn't have gas in it so I just "borrowed" some of yours? You weren't using it at the time, and the cost was negligible (according to my terms) so its cool that I did it, and Dirt's the asshole for reacting.

I'm "stealing" both electricity and gas at my apartment. My building is a 6 unit building, and two of the units were additions at some point. When they made the addition, they only made one extra power meter and gas meter (perhaps those two units were one unit at some point and a wall was put in?). Either way, I moved in here seven months ago. Every month, I call the electric company and gas company to try to establish an account. My unit of the building does not exist on their "grid", as it is the last unit in the building - F. They have units A-E in their system, but not F. So far, I have not had my gas or electricity turned off on me, and I've made reasonable attempts to pay them and set up billing. So consider that stealing if you will.

I did knowingly steal wireless for about a week when I first moved in before the cable guy could get out to my unit, so that I could find out who the hell the service providers were in my area, and do the essential stuff.

You could just protect yourself from such stuff like everyone else and stop whining...

My buddy had an access point set up in his apartment before wireless was really common. Then he started noticing a LOT of activity when he wasn't on. So he'd do his web thing and unplug the WAP from the modem at 7 or 8 at night. One jackass actually asked him what was happening to the wireless in the evening.

Oddly I don't consider what you're doing to be theft. You have tried, several times it sounds like, to make it right.

That's a world of difference between you and what I am talking about. You did the right thing, made every effort, and by no fault of your own you get the benefit of someone else being a dumbass.

Dirt, let me ask you this. In your life, have you EVER downloaded a song or movie without paying for it (excluding ones designated as free to share or download)?

he apparently has decided to become my own personal jackass. see my ride pics thread's last page, second sig link.

as I wrote in that thread: plugging in my e-bike battery's charger at work is equivalent to plugging in a laptop or cell phone. big whoop.

I didn't do Napster because I only had dial up, only had one phone line, and didn't want to wait 19 hours to hear Britney's biggest flop that week.

I didn't go P2P when I finally got wireless because that was about when it all started to hit the fan with metallica and napster. I was working at a gig where I had to keep my nose cleaner then clean.

Now I just don't because I still have to keep my nose clean, and I can't afford the fines.

To me $.99 isn't that much. If I need some random or obscure thing not on iTunes then I go to a local store and buy a CD.

Just how I am however.

Because you're a THIEF!

This whole thing about "oh well, its just a little thing" makes me want to blow day-glo vomit all over my desk.

Pennies add up to nickels. Nickels add up to dimes. Dimes add up to dollars.

Someone has to pay, its how the system works. What makes you so goddamn special that the rest of the world should have to shoulder your costs?

Just checking to make sure the pot wasn't calling the kettle black.
Nope, I try to live in opposition to the things that I really can't deal with.
Mooching is right at the top of that list, so if I won't tolerate it in others then that has to start with me.

dirt, stop being a retard. yes capitalism sucks, but what are you gonna do about it? Sh*t your pants again?
Wait, were you there that night in New Orleans?

This isn't capitalism I am talking about.
Or maybe it is.

The fact that Toshi is so arrogant about the fact that he mooches off all around is the really issue I am not alright with.

Sometimes there are lines in this world. For me, this is one that I have a real issue with.

Lord, I would never normally ask for this, but please let someone "borrow" Toshi's bikes because he wasn't using them at the time.

I am so close to neg repping this troll.

I plug in my cell, Nokia n800, andmy laptop at work. I have NEVER seen my boss or anyone else complain. If I am on a trip I use whatever unsecured wireless is available. Why? because it doesn't matter.

You're making a fvcking mountain out of a mole hill dumbass.

No, i wasn't there the night you got raped. Or sh*t your pants. Or had someone borrow your internet. Or steal your electricity. And frankly I don't give a flying fvck, nor to I have any idea what you're talking about.

So what do you propose, padlocks on all electrical outlets? Coin op power outlets?

OH OH let's all watch! It just happened! Dirt crossed the line from being a mildly entertaining d-bag to be a spiteful prick.

Should I refund my company $0.05 every time I flush the toilet?

One thing you don't take into consideration, is that these kinds of things (water for toilets, electrical outlets, etc, etc) are accounted for in personnel overhead? AKA operating expenses.

I thought you were talking about this dude...

anyway, in the last month i've simplified my life a bunch: threw out a ton of junk i'd been moving with me from place to place since undergrad, since high school even; moved to an apartment with no parking space and concurrently sold my car (which isn't going to be replaced for at least a year -- i signed up for Zipcar instead to use in a pinch); and now, without roommates who use such things, have no cable, landline, or internet service and no corresponding bills. i am stealing one of my neighbors' WiFi, however, but i'll be that much richer plus i won't be on the hook when the RIAA comes a-knockin'...

The fact the wireless connections are unprotected probably means that the owners don't mind if you use it, there fore this is not theft. Cracking access codes is theft.

Whatever. When you pay back my six-figure student loans then we'll talk.
Toshi, that statement is arrogant with a sense of entitlement.

That being said, Dirt, starting a thread in the lounge to complain about another member's actions that don't affect you is poor form.

Now both of you go back to your respective corners!

This thread has failed.

a dollar would be waaaay too much, and that's assuming your employer doesn't count outlet access as a perk ;) . I've used 33 cents of electricity to ride my e-bike 262 miles so far. Your phone probably uses a dollar's worth over a year.

Yup, sometimes I do that.
Sometimes? :busted:

With Toshi's thing... well, I can hardly suggest that an environmentally friendly and all-around positive thing as an electric bike is any kind of serious moral problem plugging it in at work.

The WiFi I have mixed feelings about and am hard pressed to argue that it's right. It's strictly a luxury item, there are cheaper alternatives (EDGE tethering is slow but it's a luxury item. You pay or you suffer.) - I think your reaction to it is pretty extreme, though. I'm not sure Toshi's leeching of a small amount of bandwidth is enough to vomit with rage... it's not like I, or most of us, haven't done similar things at various times.

The fact the wireless connections are unprotected probably means that the owners don't mind if you use it, there fore this is not theft.
Err... yeah. Is this intended to be tongue-in-cheek?

Dude, go out and ride your bike. It will make you feel a little better. It might not fix the theft thing, but at least you will calm down a little.

Toshi, that statement is arrogant with a sense of entitlement.
The context of that quote was two goons implying that I should be paying full-fare comcast rates and somehow depositing pennies in the hospital's treasury because I'm (er, will be as of Saturday) a doctor, and therefore must be rich. The reality is that medical residents are basically paid with peanuts and candy.

In that context I think my response was appropriate.

This is a good point. A lot of corporations are now offering incentives for their employees to carpool, use alternative transportation to commute, etc.

That being said, Toshi is creating far less of an environmental footprint by using an electric bike than something that is gas powered.
