Carmel Mtn Mesa/Del Mar Mesa "trails plan" issues

At this evening's CAC meeting for Los Penasquitos, the committee voted 7-6 to approve the Del Mar Mesa Trails (Closure) Plan, which formally closes more than 85% of the existing trails and specifically excludes the east-west connectors, either through the CDFW land or using Tunnel 3-to-2 to...

Carmel Mtn Mesa/Del Mar Mesa "trails plan" issues

Wow, time flies... This thread began when the Multiuse Trails Coalition was out there in PQ all alone, advocating for trails access and preservation at the Carmel Mtn. side of the preserves and just beginning to raise issues regarding the Del Mar Mesa (which wasn't in the plans in 2005 yet)...

    SD ride this Thursday (1/28)

Noble has snow all over it today, and not just a little. The reality of the other trails are that they're quite wet, and rain is expected for Wednesday. Most SD riders are opting to preserve the trails for later and keeping off them. We have a helluva microbrew scene... hit that!

    hub

Yes, if you mean "should I be able to flip the quick release lever with my fingers", and No, if you've either got a through bolt (ie big nuts on each side) or are turning the nut side of the quick release while the QR is in the closed position. Either way, when you intend to ride the bike...

is it possible to use the cog from shimano cassette in single speed conversion???!!!

Good advice, and unless the original poster is running a very low-level Shimano cogset, they'll be mounted on a spider and not useable individually (other than the smallest, like the 12, for example). Frankly, the most frugal move is to buy a BMX cog for 4 bucks and save the cassette for...

Are carbon bars worth it on a rigid?

I think they're worth it and functional. By the way, I use Oury lock-ons... not as plush as the slip-on versions, but they're thicker than others and have the same grip diameter as the classics.

Going to mammoth to bike for the first time

The XC stuff is all over. If you put Stan's in your tires, you're not likely to flat from anything unless you tear a sidewall. There aren't a lot of thorns up there...it's usually sharp rocks or rattlesnake fangs that cause the flats. Er, strike that second one.

Going to mammoth to bike for the first time

You'll like tubeless up there. If you can fit 2.3's you'll be glad you did on the upper mountain. Pick something with tall lugs, since you'll be riding in sections with moon dust, pumice or both. The brake bleeding thing affects a lot of bikes, and the shop at the Lodge re-bleed a lot of...

Going to mammoth to bike for the first time

Some other stuff to bring: if you're running hydro brakes, bring a bleed kit. If you set up your bike down here near sea level and use DOT fluid, it will outgass at altitude and present a real bummer when you grab a handful of brake. The simple fix is to do a quick bleed to extract the...

Since everyone's started shuttling Baldy  :nono: Big Bear has never been better! That "Ghost Town" comment might ruin it all, though... Let's keep this thread alive, even if it means using gratuitious comments about cheapass Motiv bikes or filthy, unkempt downhillers that listen...
