roughly half as strong and 1/3 the weight. depends on the application. marzocchi has the 4X with an alum steerer. i never owned a fork with one. if the diameter is much thicker i guess it would be a good way to keep the strength and shed some weight. manitou doesn't mention what type of aluminum though.

revised prototype. it is 80mm instead of 100 and has 20mm axle. again it is still a prototype, i should have the production soon.
