I don't fully comprehend mtn bike magazines in the US avoiding Brooklyn like the plague. (Exception, of course, the great shot of Doc in Mountain Biking from US Open. Many thanks to Alan Davis and crew.) Do any of you have an idea why this might be? If so, please shed some light. Feel free to be as brutally honest as the answer might be. I can take it. (Unless you're going to try to rip on a bike you've never ridden or rode only in the parking lot or up a hill..mmmkay? Thanks.) Now I can't guarantee the other Bklynites in here can take it, but I'll see what I can do to keep them at bay. ;)

While you ponder this, here's yet another little ditty on Brooklyn in the latest DIRT. From the UK. Not the USA, where Brooklyn's are made. That's Erik "Iceberg" Hudson, photos are from Alpes d'Huez MegaAvalanche 2005. We love you Napolean Dynamite! (edit: that's a Mike Rose reference not an Iceberg ref.)

Its because they dont advertise. They dont really need to. If you look at the mags the bikes reveiwed usually have a big advertisment in it also.

Good point. However not valid across the board because I know of other small DH bike companies that are covered with some frequency yet do not advertise.

To my knowledge Bklyn has never advertised anywhere. State-side or Europe. (Except Litter, but that doesn't count.) Not in DIRT, or MBUK, or any of the Euro mags. Yet those magazines jump at every chance to cover something about Brooklyn.

Why the hate from the States?

i don't think its a conscious bias on the part of domestic publications. a few possible reasons:

-no pro riders in the media / lack of public exposure / visibility / recognition.
-no print advertising: companies that regularily spend $$ on advertising are most likely going to see more exposure in reviews, etc.
-the boutique factor: high price / limited availability - magazine reviewing is typically biased towards rides that are readily available & realistically affordable to a larger skew of the readership. there are lots of cool small companies out there that rarely see magazine exposure.

etc...

They are few and far between plus they probably still think they are heavy as they used to be. Just not informed.

More good points....but all that holds true with the UK/Euro magazines yet it doesn't stop them from putting Bklyn in their pages.

And you're right, there are plenty of other really great but small bike companies not getting the props they too might deserve. It's not like Bklyn cares too much about it since they make minimal if any effort to change that themselves.

Do they even need coverage?

I'm not sure about you, but i heard about Brooklyn completely through word of mouth, and this runs true with 99% of people i've spoken to about them. I think it adds a certain "Ha! In your face!" factor too, when you can sit back and say "Yeah, we're so popular 'cos we make rockin' products. Not because we spent thousands on a rediculous marketing campaign to cover every other page in every magazine in the world".

some ppl are destined to have a bmw. I had never seen one in person and never talked to anyone who ever owned one. For two years I had a photo of one printed out off the internet and hanging above my desk at work. I ended up buying that exact frame - spooky or Anthony Robbins type stuff ??

Word of mouth, the internet, cool people and awesome bikes will sell products. I answer as many questions and try to give people a positive impression about brooklyn when they see my bike, as it is often times their first time to see one in person. (not many bmws out west). If selling bikes were Doc's No.1 top priority, he'd have flunkies building them like hot cakes and he'd get his mini-link in a Jay-Z rap video. But I dont want to ride with people like that. I dont like having to wait on indefinite hold with some dude named todd in warranty trying to get a RA#. Am i a number ? For me, bmw is the perfect mix of personal service and excellent products that reflect the passion and attention to detail that Doc puts into his frames. Im glad Doc is a young gun and not some old codger. I hope that the company is good to him and he keep doing what he is doing forever. Best wishes for 2006 Chris !

how are BMW's weight. They look extremly heavy like 50+lbs, The DH model at least.
The Racelink (DH model) may vary from 44-50+ depending on your parts. mine is 47 as pictured in my sig and 46+ with 2.5/2.35 tires. It really does feel and pedal much lighter due to the fact that alot of your energy goes straight to the rear wheel and not pedal bob.

Haha, Tony Robbins. Get a set of teeth buddy.

Did y'all know Brooklyn's heading in to its 10th year of business?

My racelink is 44lbs, btw.

I vote for a complete deletion so we can go back to talking about our bikes in other threads and start many others as well. That would really piss the haters off, eh?

The alternative is having anywhere from 2-10 bmw threads going at any one time like the mind numbing Avy Cult* members do. That would really wear out our welcome and do more harm than good. Allowing us to keep ourselves self-contained is tops. I think this thread has become accepted as a part of the RM DH landscape. We ain't harmin' anybudy.
