Joel, your bike looks SO fast in that picture. The new seat and post adds alot of speed in the look, (and I guess it does ridingwise also). But don't crash with it, don't take to much beating. (Racecomponents newer do, unfortunatly, hehe).
Have you desided on what brakes you're getting?

Im very curious about the 4 piston Hayes proto that i have seen floating around. But i suspect that they won't be available for a while based on all the pre-release marketing they did on the el camino.

Im 99% sure I'll have Maguras. Grant's and Doc's and Tmx's Gustavs felt soo awesome. Im looking for more sheer stopping power for those sweeping high-speed-into-singletrack sections that will save my hands.

Ps. i still have yet to get the rear wheel rebuilt with the Mavic 823. Im so excited to have new UST rims. They will make tire changes (at races especially) soo easy compared to the ghetto tubless setup ive been running for 2+ years.

Thanks for the complements on RL#10. i threw it up on a scale and it is sitting around 43-44lbs. it does have some ti bits on it, which helps. just waiting to hear back about a replacement for the broken carbon brake arm for it.

love the stealth look of Jimmy Pops...actually, great looking bikes all around. even the lime green one isn't too bad considering...

nice one joel you should get like a flat black color sticker so you could just barely notice it.

the green one looks nice cept for the fork...

if i had a nicer table setup in my basement i'd be taking my frame apart aswell. but was a lot more fun meeting Doc again and seeing the factory.

JB - i like what you have done with the RL. They are always changing (mine is anyway)

So dont you love those ust mavics compared to the arrows? Dont get me wrong, i like arrow but it is soo nice to throw a tire on that 823 and air it up - no tubes. you can change tires for any reason with little trouble. I was the king of ghetto tubeless on 3 bikes and constantly changing tires. I was finally sick of it.

Love the UST's easy tyre change and i can feel the less rotatinal masses. faster acceleration.

regarding the gustavs i started off with hope Ti6 on the TMX and i expirienced brake fade. then i switched to a 2002 Gustavs before i sold it and there was a great difference. better modulation and the less fatigue in the fingers. can litterally control the brake with 1 finger.

At that time i had 3 sets of gustavs(incl a nice set of raceline yellows) and upgraded a 2003 set with the 2005 levers and rotors( the rotors are licenced by galfer) and a set of goodridge cabels. they are the best brake ever. bleeded my brake with citröen mineral brake fluid. ist which is 40 times cheaper than the royal blood from magura but is the exactly the same just in a different bottle. works great.

How much does gustavs cost in the states?

JB. In the US, new gustavs are like $250 + or – per wheel (depending on what adapter you need). They finally have an adapter for the DH40.

I dont remember which fluid is the thicker fluid but I liked the way the thicker fluid made the lever feel. is the blue fluid the thicker?

I like the yellow calipers, the black is boring.

I have used Galfter pads and rotors in the past with great success. I have heard stories about using aftermarket pads with gustavs will void the warrante becasue the magura pads are designed in a way to prevent the caliper from overheating. I donno, just what i heard and read online.

I want to put gustavs on my RL and my brothers V10 for next summer.

the price is about the same as in europe.
allthough some german webshops sometime have clear out sales and offer them at an extremely low price.

I found that Red EBC pads are super nice. they are the high preformance pads and will wear down 10 times faster than the regular ones but in very steep courses the make up for the durability issue in raw stopping power. i currently run the standard magura pads for every day riding but have ordered a set of goodridge pads. heard all good about them.

the blue is the thinner one and for '06 they made it even thinner. may b good for the marthas but i like the thicker oil better too.

Hey Joel you gotta get the gustavs. I have gustavs on all three of my bikes and there aint nothing else out there that compares in power.

the set you have tried must have had oil on the pads og air in the tubes.

FACT: Magura Gustav M is the only discbrake certified for offroad tandem usage!!!

Hmmmm - but I dont have to stop a freight train....I have a DH bike:p I need modulation and not just a stick in the front wheel.....and with the RL not being that heavy what do you want with the M Gustav ?

don't get me wrong. its also super easy to modulate. best ive ever tried. also its not usually the bike that weighs much but the pilot. usually about 3 to 8 times as much as the bike.

the '04-'05 levers has the very long leverblade. can fit 4 fingers on it. but if you mount it so that your index finger is at the very edge of the leverblade then you can apply a lot of torque and get the nice modulation that the gustavs ar so well known for.

Hmmmm, very interesting - I would like to try yours next time we meet - just went for a set of Saints, so lets see how that works out:)

you got it.

saint works too but i'm concerned about the very small amount of oil the contain. at least for my weight.

thats another thing about the gustavs. giant expansion resevoir and and oil chamber in the caliper.

Your bike looks great JB. Som improvments for each time you post a new pic, I love it.

I just bought some Saints for my RL, can't wait to try'em. BUT if I'm not pleased I going for the Gustavs, no doubt. Those brakes kicks ass. (Heavy though...)
