I'm building a trike. The drivetrain is pure mountain bike. Is it possible/advisable to mix components? eBay has a fair number of derailleurs, shifters and gear packages; I am considering using a SRAM shifter and derailleur with a Shimano megarange rear cassette.
Am I asking for trouble? I'm...
The full recipe:
4130 cromoly tubing, 1.75" x .035 wall
TIG welding
The rear frame will be a triangle cut out of a mountain bike. The front frame will be a single spine running from the old seat tube to the pedals, and a cross axle bent to around 110 degrees.
I plan to cap the tubing...
Thank you- they're actually going on the front of a tadpole trike that I am building. So I will have gearing in my favour and I'll be lying down, not standing :)
Are high-pressure tires and tubes available for 20" wheels? I rode a mountain bike over the road for a few years with one and it helped my 'milage' considerably.
Thank you.
Hooples, yes, I am building the frame. My hope is to build this one, ride it for a year then give it to my wife and build the mark two model with what I've learned from this one :)
Stinkyboy, that site looks like a good one but it receives a tiny fraction of the traffic that this one does-...
I'm deeply honored :blah: :)
I like bikes, but my road bike is a killer. I've still got energy at the end of the ride but I feel like crying when I see gravel- this bike feels like I'm sitting on a log splitter even with the gel saddle. I figure that with the recumbent, once I get my legs...
I'm going to be building a recumbent trike over the winter. I've just ordered steel (1.75" 4130 rounds, .035 wall) and the front wheels (20" plastic mags, the kind that were really cool in the early eighties ;) ).:thumb:
I'll be here a lot this winter, asking silly questions and ordering...
I'm still leaning towards paint. If I could assure myself that my little spitball would spread it well enough to seal the metal (appearance is irrelevant... who'se going to be in my bike's tubing anyway?) I would just call this good. I hope to never have to retreat the frame.
I want to cap the tubes to seal them, so that they will not be exposed to water, salt, lava, whatever I am riding through. On a trike, at least the main tube is exposed at both ends- that's what I plan to cap.
Hmmm... both nice... but both list as aerosols. I want a solution that I can pour in, since I will have limited access to the inside of my frame. I can gin together a spitball to spread things (fuzzy ball 2.5" in diameter [for my two inch tubes] with a wire to drag it through the tubes...
I'm planning to build a frame (a trike, specifically, but this would affect standard bikes too). I'll be using 4130 cromoly. I've read about a substance that can prevent rust. I suppose that I could just run some paint down the tubes, but there'll be no practical way to keep it from pooling (and...
