There was a fella at Plattekill last race, from Reading Racing who's gotta be 40 (and change :D ) riding a TMX. Anyone know who he is? I have a pic here but it's looking mighty crappy when I try to downsize the image. I miss Pshop. Speaking of trying to fit images in here, how does one attach a pic without it being a thumbnail? Like how xy9ine posted his kitty knarcore.

btw, I had a rippin' good time at Diablo sunday. Their trail work is off the hook and the network is growing at a healthy rate. If you live back east and you haven't been yet, you must go. You will likely not forgive yourself for not getting there sooner once you finally do.

Terry - if you can host the photo on a web site somewhere you can click on the yellow mountain like icon, then insert the url of the photo and then click on the icon again to put the proper HTML tags before and after the image.

Wow actually it is even easier - it just brings up a popup box and you past the URL in and you are golden. See below.

Found this one too and figured I'd post it - is that a BMW owners Grin on that guy?? Signature smile perhaps?? Gotta love the Green paint scheme too.

Hey, that's my bike, photo taken in my back yard (aka: Central Park). Where'd you get that?

Thanks for the photo posting info Mark. I'll find me a website to host some shots and see if I can be fancy too.

Terry - I did a google search on Brooklyn TMX and that's the first web site I went to follwoing the links provided.

Here's the site: http://bikeaddict.com/bikes/tmx.html

There was a fairly recent thread in the lounge about good sites to host photos - I think douglas uses a good site that allows a lot of photos for free or for very little.

Nice pics macmx - Gotta love these bikes!!

There'll be pics of me and the ducky soon. I just got back from Åre(www.mtbfreerider.com)

Hear this - i tried some dirtjumping and NS with the ducky - didn't work :) Those tight corners on any steep trail are just not meant for battleship sized bikes :)

Better hit the sack!

HI guys, thought you might like to see my TMX in its current guise.Frame No.33 with rear no. 18.
I've got a set of Bulb/Big un on 24" doublewides going on it in the next few day, with some fat 3" tyres, together with new graphics and a BMW saddle.
Taking it out to Les Gets in a few weeks for some full on DH action, you don't get too many chairlifts here in London, UK!!
Hopefully I'll get some good action shots for you to check out.

Question for you TMX owners, and they have to do with shock set up and rear suspension.

i have had two crashes, one dramatic and one stupid (the one that broke my collarbone) but they both have a common trait - i either got bucked or was way nose heavy when landing making me look at the set up i have on the rear shock. but there are stories of the TMX bottoming and thus the change by bmw to a link activated rear shock.

i notice that cruising through downhill single track that my rear tire sometime bites my shorts by getting really close to my seat. on my bike, the rear tire rides VERY close to my seat while sitting and just cruising through single track - probably about 3-5" away depending.

I am assuming that just motoring around that riding that deep in the travel is ok but doesn't the shock ramp up during a big hit?? or is that the "flaw" with the TMX that is does not ramp-up? thus needing to have the shock/spring setup FIRM as opposed to PLUSH ??

I like a real plush ride with a slow rebound and have run that set up successfully in the past with other frames. Generally speaking, what is the deal with the TMX?

bruised and broken and open to suggestions,

joel

yes you're right on. The link design on the newer models addresses the issue of lack of ramp-up on the TMX. My guess is you might want to try running a stiffer spring on that TMX of mine. errrrr i mean yours :)

wow i've missed quite a few things here for a while. Going through a bunch of legal issues  . When is the state of VA gonna grow up and realize we don't live in the middle ages anymore

joel,

mine rides on the plusher end of the spectrum (i've got a 450lb spring - i weight 160) - about 25% sag. it does blow through the travel quickly and occasionally bottoms on slower compressions, but (interestingly) never bottoms harshly on big drops. you can feel all the travel is being used, but the avy seems to have a pretty effective high-speed compression circuit. i dial in lots of compression, and that seems to compensate (somewhat) for the linear suspension design. also, i set my shock up with only 1 or 2 rebound clicks - lively (i like a 'poppier' feel for jumping), but still well damped.

i've never been bucked by the bike; conersely, i found the bike to fly rear heavy - i have to consciously push the front down to match trannies. dunno if this is because the rear is tonnes heavier than my previous bikes, or some wierd geometry characteristic, but i've since gotten used to it. still works pretty well for an old frame.

yeah cause i remember riding that TMX with a super T (light weight by that frame's standards), and for the very little air I did get on it, it did feel heavier towards the rear. Joel you did get that Avalanche shock revalved for your weight through Craig didn't you? Might need to run it through him for some more fine tuning? Just guesses from here... The TMX and even my mini link actually DO ride a fair amount into their travel, even just by sitting on them. The rear wheel getting close to the seat is normal i'd say, that bike does have a ton of travel and remember the seat is slanted backwards a good amount. My RM9 would actually RUB the tire on the seat if I didn't move it up to where i wasn't really confortable on it. At Snowshoe I even noticed every single Yeti DH bike that rode past me had the tire rubbing the seat on medium to larger drops. At full compression if your wheel is about an inch from your seat i'd consider that a more than fair safety distance :)
That's what happens with them huber long travel rigs :D

you know another way to give the bike a lighter front end FEEL (it's not truely lighter but feels lighter) in my opinion is to raise your front end if you can. If you can push your Monster T stanctions down a little in the crowns and raise the front end, it will make it easier to lift that front end than it would be if it were say an inch or 2 lower on the handlebar. This has adverse effects on the geometry though, but I personally have always liked bikes with taller front ends. Even when heavy they're easy to pull up.
If the resulting geometry seems to be OK and you can get used to, then it's definitely something worth trying. I know miss TMX just went to a taller fork on her Racey Linkie. How do you like it compared to you old upside down huber MX style forks that were a bit lower? :)

Didn't notice any bucking until I got to be a better rider and took on bigger moves. I was able to avoid some of it as I started handling the bike more like motocross than a mtn bike. No clue how, but it definately helped some.

Race Link no bucky. :)

Hi Shorty, long time. Nice to see your prickle-pinned face again. I am completely and utterly digging the taller forkenschtein on Linky-poo. Easy lifting and closer match to the Av in back. I agree, if Joel hasn't had his shock valved to his specs, it's worth a call/email to Craig. Perhaps it could use a re-charge, which would be a quick trip to the moto shop. But alas, even if our suggestions for Joel do help, they will not cure the problem. Least not to my knowledge.

thanks guys and gals. Craig has been on a weeks vacation from work but i think his recorder said he's back in the 27th, yesterday. I'm sending it in just so I'll feel better. My confidence has been shaken. i hate that feeling. I now sit and krenge while watching mtb dvd's instead of saing " HELL YEAH!!! "

I just need to heal up and get back on the bike. I should have some video soon of my crash at Mena where my bike went flying through a teams tent and I plow'd over a dude and his GF. I hear it was sweet. It was at the base of a high speed drop where i landed way out in the flat, got bucked and went front wheel first into these people at about 20~ mph.

Hi guys (and gal),

BMW fan here. Outa my price range at this time.

Joel, bummer about your injuries. 4 months on my separated shoulder, still pains. Bent the plate holding my collar bone in the same crash. I see your BMW goods on ebay. Hope it's not to pay the doctor. Please do post the crash video.

Ya'll keep those pictures comin' I only have ~30 or so BMW picts I use as screen savers.

Could you ppl please help me out here... You're using words I'm not familiar with. For example:

get bucked by the bike

to krenge

lack of ramp-up

what does these things mean? :)

I cant wait to see that video. im healing very quick. my collar bone broke way out at the very tip of my shoulder so there is muscle holding the bone in place so that is joined together quick and with less pain and discomfort. I'm glad to have a easy injury after a few years ago where i spit the heel bone out the side of my foot. barf!
Thanks!
Sincerely,
joel

landing from a jump or drop in such a manner that the rear suspension bottoms out and sends your ass over the handle bars.

micce said:

i think "cringe" is the correct spelling, sorry. but it means that it scares me.

micce said:

I'm talking about the rear shocks ability to stay super plush or soft during easy trail riding but when you make a big hit or drop, the suspension "ramps-up" or gets very firm, very fast to prevent the suspension from bottoming out.

I THINK bucked is like pulling a Bender, i.e. landing, then poggoing back up and off the bike over the bars... Is that right?

Heal quick Joel and ride safe :) I wish I could ride hard enough to find the limits of these bikes.

Awright... I think I know what you're talking aboot now :)

Here's a link to a lil sequence(50mb) a friend of mine made the other day. It's from a festival we attended last week. Me and the Rubber Ducky is represented 2:17 into the flic - that's why I choose this bmw porn thread, hehe... I'm somewhat slow/tired in the sequence cuz that's the last thing I did that day. I'd usually come outta that curve faster... just so you know. Some of the other riders are friends aswell and some are complete strangers who happened to be there when the camera was rolling. Enjoy.

thanks, guys. ya, but shortbus - the seat has sparkles! aesthetics override comfort every time! sure its hard plastic, but how much do you really use a seat, anyways?

joel - no pics from the race (i dont actually ride, i just make up good stories). it was pretty cool. while there were a bunch of fast parts, there were alot of pedally tight singletrack bits that would have benefitted a light bike. total elevation drop was 3400', 7.5 miles long. fitness was definately a huge factor. my time was 18 minutes & change. pretty damn mediocre. the winning pro time (cedric gracia) was 15 something!
