A 5-watt heavy-water moderated and reflected reactor (“critical facility”) at Nuclear Lake in Pawling, NY was located at 41.597678, -73.648571. The Appalachian Trail passes within one or two hundred feet of the location of a 1972 explosion that caused the site to be retired.

At the time I attended, my college had a functioning nuclear reactor on campus that supported the nuclear engineering program. It has since been shut down and removed, but it was weird working in the machine shop with that next door.
