I had a guy at 7-11 kick back a Canadian penny that was mixed in with some change I had. I tried to argue that it was worth $.012 USD, but he wasn't having it.
I remember distinctly when I was in 7th grade in Pennsylvania ... milk was $0.30. This particular day when I gave the milk lady my money (a quarter & a nickel), she looked at it disdainfully and tossed back the CAD nickel that somehow got mixed in. I think this is the first CAD I'd ever seen, and to me they looked the same. I told her it's all I had, but the cold hearted lady didn't care. This didn't make much sense to me and I've paid close attention to my pocket change ever since.
