I'm just gonna say it because not enough people know it...

Payroll taxes are your Social Security and Medicare taxes.

So if you cut payroll taxes, you cut the amount of money going into both funds. Employers/Republicans really want them cut because they have to pay 1:1 what you pay - 12.4% gets paid, you only pay 6.2%.

So this article is about Trump political appointees who are now having to pay back deferred payroll taxes. The cutoff point where this was mandatory was below $4k bi-weekly. I'm well aware of how little we pay federal employees (as one myself) but I'm still surprised that there are a significant number of politically appointed positions where you're making <$104k per year. Maybe more of these positions are outside of the DC area, where the locality adjustment is high, than I realize.
