I'm glad you are doing well for yourself.

But it doesn't change the fact that it's still a waste of money, even if you have money to waste. My friends like to point out the fact that I make more than them (some much more) yet I ride the bus to work while they drive nice rigs. Why? Because I feel it's the best use of my time and money.

It's about personal choice. You can't seem to make the choice yourself, so you asked.

konabumm, just do yourself a favor and get the bimmer.

I have long been a BMW person. I've driven a lot of powerful, fun-to-drive sports cars/sedans, and I am sorry but no manufacturer can compare to the quality and pure driving joy that a BMW provides. The handling, road feel, and just fit and finish are unparalleled. If you really love to drive, and it sounds like you do...get the BMW.

After 7 years of driving an SUV, I finally was able to financially swing getting back into a BMW. I drove a '92 325i before that, and absolutely loved it. Last spring I picked up a CPO '04 325xi sport package, xenon, all the goodies except nav (which sucks anyway). I couldn't be happier.

I looked at and test drove many competitors:
Infinity G35
Subie Legacy GT
Lexus IS
Audi A4

Some were better in certain areas, but none offered the complete package of the BMW. The G35 was really fun to drive, and really fast, but it just felt...raw. The Subie was the same way - felt like a high school racerboy car. The Lexus was just meh. The A4 had that familiar German solidity, but it just didn't handle the road as well as the BMW. I probably could have pulled off a 330xi, but even the 325xi felt so much better on the road compared with anything else, it was just a no brainer when I found the right one.

Also with regards to the Lexus, I know a couple BMW folks who've switched over to try the IS, and wound up selling within a year and going back to the BMW. For whatever that's worth.

P.S. My mom picked up a 335i euro delivery last summer...that thing is ridiculously fast. Kinda scary actually, in a really really good way :)

Here she is, loaded with bikes & box for the cross-country move last year. Don't worry, the box is long gone. But I keep the bike racks up year round.

After reading some of the posts in this thread, I'd be curious to know what kind of fine automobiles some of you drive....

Word.

I spend a lot of time in my car, and enjoying that time is pretty high on my priority list. I drive a 540. I never thought I would, always thought of them as 'snooty', but I got to drive a friends 335i, and finally understood why BMW enthusiasts are such die hard fans. It is seriously the most rewarding car I've ever owned.

That said, it's also rediculously expensive to maintain. When your free/pre-paid maint is up, find a good non-dealer specialist.

If you want AWD, get an 'xi'. Yes, audi isn't the only company doing AWD.

Other than that, I highly recommend the upgrade from 328 to 335. The 335i has a turbo, and with a few electronic tweaks can safely net about 370hp and 400ft of torque at the rear wheels. Really. Faster than an M3.

thanks for being one of the few good post! Great information, I'm test driving next week. I'm looking forward to feeling the BMW out.

Looks really nice without the fairing. Buell Lightning headlights?
Without the screen, it looked unfinished. The headlights are aftermarket, but the screen is off a Buell Lightning.

Here's a shot when I first installed the lights. They were mounted a lot higher too.

I might cut the CF exhaust can down like the old polished one was, too.

<edit> Headlights are Aztec 8 "Dominators".

Well I'm glad to know someone has a clue - thank you.

I'm 30 - house will be paid off in 10 years. Other then my lease I have Zero monthly bills. (not including utilities) I have 12% going into 401k, I have a college fun setup got my son.

So if I want to buy a nice car, well I'm sure as hell going to buy one. Most of you might think it's a waste of cash - you might think I'm trying to make up for some little dick issues.

Thats fine, cause I don't give a damn what any of you think about me!

However - 99% of you didn't let me down, when I posted my question I knew that most of you would be tools and couldn't just answer my very simple question.
Exactly, everyone except mountain bikers think buying a $5000 bike is completelyfvckingrediculious. Same concept.

You could buy a '95 Lez Forester and be in the "cool" crowd.

I'd have to say a $5000 bike is pretty ridiculous too. There are serious diminishing returns after about $3500 and the rest is mostly about status.

I think buying a $5000 mountain bike is completelyfvckingrediculious. My DH bike for this season was just over $1100.

But I'm a cheap bastard, too.

Everyone sure is caught up on the H3 -

I really like my H3 - I've had alot of fun in it and she has been a very good SUV.

I love to go off-road, I've had 2 Jeep, a land rover, then a hummer and the hummer was by far the best off road suv (without mods)

And everyone can bash it for gas - but it's no different then any other SUV (****ty)

I'm just ready for something new - and with gas prices topping $4 a gallon something this year, buying another SUV seems like a very bad idea.

BMW has the best service you could ask for. My parents have 3 BMWs and 1 mini and the dealers around them have always taken care of them when they had issues that were out of warranty.

Seeing that the IS350 gets 18/25 while the 328i is 20/28, you have some huge gains there.

Consumer Reports said:
The Cadillac CTS achieved an "Excellent" overall score, surpassing both the 328i and C300, which received "Very Good" overall scores. The CTS is also ranked above some previously-tested sports sedans including the Lexus IS250, the Acura TSX, and the Audi A4.
Man up.

Test drive one of these:

http://www.dodge.com/en/2008/charger/models/srt8/index.html

SRT8 - 425hp
RT - 340hp
A friend had the Magnum RT with some mods and although it was a brick, it did kick it in the ass. It also averaged 27mpg, but could do as well as 30mpg on road trips.

He traded it for a 350z that gets 28mpg with a 6 speed. He said he would have kept it if it had a manual trans.

i don't even care that much about the gas mileage of it. i was objecting to the clueless BMW-fanboi's assertion that you seem like someone who "likes to drive". the implication of that is not that you like to tool around on jeep trails, but that you appreciate a car that handles well on the road.

the H3 is not such a vehicle. end of discussion

is the 328i still available in the US?

honestly try to get a bmw with the newer engines (330i or 335i) at least the models in europe gained a lot of fuel efficency with these new engines and more power ^^

My god father has the lexus and its very nice, although i would recomend an Inifniti m45 over all of them. The new audi a5 is pretty hot too. I was very impressed with the way it felt at the DC auto show.

Huh. Heheh. Heh. My wife has a connection for a GM discount, so we took a CTS out for a test drive. It was an unbelievable hunk of sh!t! The roof liner was actually pilling up and falling off, on a brand new car. Good ole american QC baby. Oh yeah!

As for douche Toshi, I drove an xterra for 7 years and over 150,000 miles. Think that thing is 'fun to drive'? Hell no. But I loved that suv and it did the job I needed it to do - endless ski road trips, off roading across mexico, CO, UT, CA, etc.

If I felt wasting some coin, I would go with the CTS-V anyway. Why half step?

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention about the bimmer. It has factory mount points for a roof rack. I just installed my thule bars this week and it was stupid easy, plus it doesn't touch the paint at all. Very nice feature for bikers IMO.
