What I think he is trying to say is that its really hard to tell if the bottom out bumper just barely touched or was completely smashed, the grease mark would be the same either way. To use the full amount of travel the bumper has to be fully compressed, right?

Just be careful when using a c-clamp because most have swivel heads and that makes it harder to get them in straight. A vice would be better than a clamp.
I'm your size and feel that the medium was better, but it probably depends on manufacturer specs also. I tried a few bikes of the guys that i build trails with and that is what felt best to me.
