what tubes are you running with schwalbe tires? single ply 2,5 in front sounds like good idea.. how foldable hold up in ust and non ust versions?
I run tubeless no snakebites this way and with snakeskin sidewalls they take a pretty herd beating...

Id run freeride over the UST, I like UST and they have there place but they are a bit more flexable than I like and they dont have a snakeskin sidewall... The freerides hold up to stans amazing and I have had NO ISSUES with this on a multitude of terrain and temperatures...

If I ran freeride and I tubed Id probably go DH tubes, or welterweights and more PSI. Snakebites will happen with almost any tubed set up...

Id get a 20" schwalbe tube with the threaded schrader valve slice and dice to a ghetto tubeless setup its super easy and RELIABLE... Had 2 snkaebites by fellow riders in the rocks on last nights shuttle and none for me... Ive had 1 issue I put a jagged rock through the tread and dented the center of my rim so any tire would have taken a beating :D....

bullcrew, thanks for reply. just now im building Ex823 with Hadley hubs. Do you mean it is ok to run UST with non UST, foldable freeride tires from schwalbe? is that so that freeride is always single ply and dh wire - dual ply? Im a bit confused that ust version weighs much more yet no snakeskin compared to freeride.

freeride 2,35 triple nano/GG are still "chattery" in rear, right?

UST has NO snakeskin and a butyl inner layer for lower porosity (density and protection) BUT the freeride version has snakeskin sidewalls (mesh fabric to keep from tearing) to keep them safe.
Schwalbe uses a real solid mixture and density on sidewalls so they dont pop and his like certain tires when you inflate them tubeless...

Yes I run Freeride version single ply kevlar bead tires tubeless all the time with stans and NO ISSUES at all...

DH casings are thicker sidewalls and a wirebead, going tubeless avoids alot of issues so you can run a lighter tire and the snakeskin takes a few more tire related issues and gets rid of them making it a winning combo....

i tried to run the muddy mary 2.35 UST on my dh bike, but found the sidewall *just* wasn't quite up to the cornering forces. i swapped on some dirty dans which i purchased at the same time. i loved the DD sidewalls and grip on dry, loose terrain, but they're a little too heavy and slow rolling. They did mount tubeless really well for a non-ust tire. For now i'm back on minion DHFs but could see trying the MM again with the DH casing.

tire test mule.

Up it to a 2.5 I rolled a 2.35 freeride as well but not the 2.5 theres quite a bit of sidewall more on hte larger freeride...

The 2.35 schwable is already a 'big' tire, so I can't see going up to the 2.5 freeride / non UST. They're not something stocked by the shop either, so I can't inspect and have to order on spec. I would try the MM DH casing, but I've got a set of minions to run and they just turn so well.

Thanks Strahan!

Bullcrew - LoL. It just looks so peaceful and scerene.

OK - so I've had my eye on the Schwalbes since the end of last year and after sitting back and observing user results - it seems like these things are legit. What interested me the most was their proprietary "Snakeskin" sidewalls... and the potential they had for UST DH applications.

Apparently Kovarik was running them tubeless at one of the WC's this year, and he's not exactly easy on gear... I've fondled a few of their GG compound tires and they seem to be soft, but not quite as soft as say, a Maxxis 40a or 3C. They feel juuuusst a bit more firm. Any idea what the exact durometer is for the GG?

I've made the decision to try a 2.35 MM in a DH casing with the GG tread compound tubeless on a 721... any issues mounting one up on this rim? Preferred rim strip for the application: Stan's, or Ghetto BMX 20" tube? I'd like to use Stan's Sauce, but Kidwoo's recipie for Porntex sounds a bit thicker with better platelet properties...

Thoughts?

Its 45 or so on the duro sticks as good and is as dense on chatter as a 40d which was my tire of choice then the 3cs and I like the properties of these a helluvalot better... Stans or other is fine on them they seat amazing , dont leach out the sides like other tires and work amazing as a tubeless setup without being a UST tire... No complaints at all....

Bullcrew - thanks man!

OK - so I'll give it a go with a Stan's strip and some Porntex on the 721. This should be interesting since I ride like a hack but only weigh 160lbs....

i have ordered MM gg front 2,5 FR and BB gg rear 2,4 DH. I was sure there was MM gg 2,3 dh in the webshop when I checked.

Next day I was trying to order, but NO tripple or GG for 2,3 MM dh . They must be popular then. One thing bugs me, there is no list, just nothing.

But I look forward to use the new wheelkit with old hubs. Im shaving over 1kg compared to old wheels

I guess MM/BB will be similiar to Michelin Comp24/16 which I have used

I've been running the Muddy Mary 2.35 DH casing tires in GG front and rear and they are nice, but East coast rocks really eat up the knobs on the rear tire. I've had about 7 or 8 days on my rear tire and need to replace it already. I was running 3C DHF Minions prior to trying the MM's and they last a heck of a lot longer.

Does Schwalbe make a Triple Nano DH casing Muddy Mary? I've seen the single ply version in Triple Nano, but haven't been able to find the DH casing in anything but GG. While I like the MM a bit more then the Minions, I think I might switch back so I don't have to constantly buy new tires.

3c is like a triple nano from schwalbe, guey gluey is comparable to a slow reezay which would die off just as fast Iused to run those.
They do make a triple 2.35 DH MM and it works killer as a rear tire lasts a lot longer and hooks up amazing a swell...

Im running a GG on the front and a TN on the rear. The TN on the rear has 1 day at Whistler and it looks like crap. The knobs are chunking and some are ripped off.

That surprises me I have a triple thats rocking the lugs and in good shape. The terrain here in Socal is a helluvalot nastier on tires than there... My guess is hard braking on rocks...

I have slammed and ripped through stuff the only tread destruction I see is if I hit a nasty rock chute and grab a handfull of brakes... Granted they probably wear a bit more than 3c but they stick a bit better...
Remember people if you want lots of life DO NOT buy a race specific tire, minions had a slow reezay that chunked and wore really bad a ST that knobs ripped off and now the 3c which is a solid design for once but wears fast as hell too....

Race tires wear they are not a economy tire like formula tires they are made for grip first longevity second....

got tires .. very nice products really!

I mounted FR version on rim following bullcrews tip (put some sealant around bends). it was fast and easy.

But with DH version , it was not so easy. I'd see see some wide opening in rim.

Im giving up and considering to use tube. Do you have another tips how to get dh on the rim properly? i dont have air compressor only floor pump.

Push center of tire down with base of hand and use fingers to grab sides and pull out and up. Do this all the way around as well as you can pull the tip out of the schrader (unscrew it) and pump it no resistance and will i.flare quicker helping get initial seal. Pull pump off pit schrader guts back in and it should be semi easy from there. You can also just take it to a gas station an usethe air there....

I couldnt get the DH version to seat with a floor pump either. I had to use a compressor. It was SUPER easy with a compressor. Mine are holding air perfectly now. I did have to run 2 scoops to get them to seal. Now they hold air for weeks before they air down.

^^that's the exact setup I tried yesterday.

Seemed to hook up well (I have the Team editions though which have a softer compound), but damn are they heavy. I haven't weighed them, but the weight is certainly noticeable.

In a dh run (tested on Champery's WC track) they felt fine once up to speed. Very stable. But the trail riding to get over there and back was an absolute killer compared to my Maxxis setup.

Not sure if I'll be keeping them on...

Got my Muddy Mary 2.5 GGG single-ply front and 2.35 Tripple Nano dual-ply rear mounted up, and I'm running tubes (dh tube in the front and a standard tube in the rear. Haven't weighed it yet. Next Wednesday I'll be test driving them at Silverstar, then off to Whistler for Crankworx.

DH casings are heavy to begin with but if its weight to weight size to size then it would be a 2.35 Schwalbe vs 2.5 Maxxis. I weighed DH versions of maxxis and Schwalbe and the SCH were a bit lighter.

I've just swapped my MM dh casing 2.35's for some freeride casings - any pressure suggestions for tubeless? I've started at 28psi and they are fine at that but just keen for some idea of limits. I know I'll work it out for myself - but a race this weekend and would like to reduce the experimenting. I was down low 20's on the dh casings, and only rolled a tyre when I went sub 18psi.

Hmm, Ive been running 35-37 rear and 30-32 front in the DH tires. I hate denting rims.

What do you guys run in the DH tires?

After a few months on MM 2.35 dh casings, gooey front, triple rear set up tubeless and i weigh 180ish - if its real rocky, 30/32. If its wet and I dont have anything that will ding my rims down to 22/24, worried about rolling resistance - 26/28. These combos have worked well for me. But its worth noting I find them to be much more sensitive to pressure than the usual Maxxis offerings that most of us are familiar with.
Still finding the limits and getting used to the different feel of the freeride casings.

B ive hit the rim a few times at these pressures but the grip and line control for me works out better if its littered with rocks then 32 MAX as it tends to get a bit too lively and micro deflections off stuff (chatter/bouncing) same reason I run GG front and rear its denser feeling.

I put a rock through the center tread and dented the center dip in my rim recently and it wouldnt have mattered if I had 35psi as hard as i hit it ripped the tread wide open through a lug as well...

So aside of rock drops and landing in rock piles I usually am pretty good occasionally I take a rock on the side or clip down and dent a rim in which case we all do from time to time on any tire (maybe not a 4ply intense LOL )

bullcrew

DO not run too low a pressure. Heres 24 rear and a rock garden... 1/2" long snakebite on the actuall tire :thumb: dented the rim also... Oh well Im working on a reason for a new set of hoops being released this interbike so DING EM UP!!!! And for the record I hit it hard enough it would have gashed any tire!

Mirrors my weekend experience with the freeride casings, 24 front and 26 rear and I burped the rear off the rim. Went to 28 front, 30 rear and had no more issues - and no noticeable change in grip. I'll certainly stick with the lighter casings but keep a close eye on the pressure. Of course "burping" is very rim specific - I may have gotten away with it if I was running stans or ust rims.

I cant find a pressure where the MM corners as good as a Minion. The braking is awesome, but the cornering is just not there. I use to feel comfortable on my Minions, but the MM scares me once in awhile. They just dont drift the same.

Your kidding right. Lol i was smokin corners so much faster and in control on hard pack loose over hard etc....

Ohh I know the issue now its because your going so much faster now it throws you out of your safety zone...;)

I find 28 psi to be the sweet spot on front especially sometimes 26. I overshot all the stuff at the jump park the day I swapped from minions to MMs. I didnt pedal any faster I hit all the bermed to gaps and jumps the exact same as before and was coming out of the berms and corners immediatley to jumps so fast I was over shooting everything... They corner beatifull and roll better but they are faster and you need to dial in for that they are really responsive and not slow/dead feeling...

MM actually took a conscious change in riding style for me. Typically I guide my bike very lightly, ease it into a gentle slide and hold it at that. This didn't work that well for me with the MM's - I need to aggressively "force" the tyres, really push them into the ground. I know when I get it right because the make the most awesome roar as they rip chunks out of the ground and throw roost - something I could never do with Minions. Next time you go out, come in over the front, try REALLY countersteering on the way in, pushing on the inside bar and outside pedal, force your head and hips to point where you want to go and haul the bike around and out of the corner as your weight transfers onto the rear wheel. Even try and pop into a manual on the way out. If you dont love MM after one run of this then perhaps its not the tyre for you.

Kovarik and Gwin are both killing it on Muddy marys, good to see

Weedkilla: to add to my above snakebite It was probably less than 24 psi combined with my weight and the rocks, I was by no means picking a line rather just hauling in and manualing hte front up land and just go... Hit whats there, I was dialing the suspension in a bit (more playing with it thaqn anything) so I wasnt checking tire psi or looking for a easy in and exit from the rocks...

Your right the tires do grab and rip when in the right spot on the right soil... LOL Love the bite and for aggressive riding they are amazing...
