On the rear fender, use a XC THE fender. You can use the front or rear portion cause they are both the same once you cut em down to fit on your RL.
Keep the unused section of the fender as a spare.

Also, on the DHF, I used a Unibit to drill out the hole so i could fit my headlock thru the stock THE bracket.

Atleast i think i used the stock bracket. If not, just go to the hardware store and buy a piece of flat metal and make your own bracket.

tried to mount another one to protect the links - DID NOT work.

THis winter, I'm going to get a thick piece of rubber to act like a mud flap to cover the links from mud. it will look pimp.

Also, get you a plug for your crank arm to keep water out

Hey Joel,
I finally got my fenders for my Race Link. The Fork took quite a bit of fiddling, but I think I got it as good as it's gonna go. It actually fits through the stock bolt in the headlock, so I didn't have to modify it there, just bend it to fit it. I'll see if I can get a cam to show it.

I have another question on the rear though, I've got a tHE XC fender, and I'm beginning to modify it gingerly (measure twice, cut once), but I noticed two things from your photos:

One, you removed the thick plastic centerpiece- Why?
And two, you have the fender bolted to the outside of the tab, instead of the inside. Was that just because of the bottom fender, or did you need all that room?

Thanks, I'll post pictures when it's done.

-Andrew

One more:

There should be an O ring and retainer on every one of the linkage ends, right?

I tore down my bike tonight and one fell off, so I put it back where I thought it should go, but that bearing was really tight for some reason, and it didn't seem to fit like it should. It seemed to pan out once I tightened it down, but I don't want take it out for a ride and destroy it.

Gives more room if bolts are trimmed also has a tidier apearance, with nice lil bolt heads.
Headlocks are such a heavy bit of unessacery gear. A star fangled nut top and bottom should do the trick and whack the headlock in your toolkit,IMO.

should I not buy an FQ?

I have the opportunity to buy one for $3500 full built, hope minis, z150, brand new (or near-new). I rode it around the dude's apartment...and it felt amazing. Anybody have commentary on whether or not I'll be frustrated with the sizing? I'm 5'11/6'. It'll be a short track trail bike (no 15 milers, all 4 mile or so) for east coast riding....plus skate park, dirt, and dh for my girlfriend.

Am i nuts for wanting to spend another 3.5gs on a bike, especially with whatever is going on at bmw?

Yes I'd snap that baby and make sure you get 2 seatposts/seats for easy switch, one for pedalling one for jumping/DH'ing, esp since it's a small bike and you're tall.

Switch, hop on, enjoy :D
Life doesn't get much better than on a FQ!

Wow, that's awesome Lars! Big bike!

Very cool that you managed to convert the King hub too.
Can't wait to hear what you think about the ride!

Yeah, it is a big bike, but still feels uch smaller than the Karpiel maybe due to the low stand over height and very compact frame design. No real time on it yet, but I am sure it is going to ride nicely as soon as I have it dialed in. It is indeed a heavy bike, though.

Whoa. Hitmen (hitmans???) are splendid bikes.

Perhaps I've missed this, but does anybody know if the quality at BMW has decreased/increased/stayed the same since Doc left? What about wait times/etc?

Sup fellow BMWers..I was just wondering if you guys could help me by telling me how you guys clean out your pivits/bearings on your bikes, especially the racelink...I'm having a hell of a time getting in to those tight nooks and crannies to get the gunk out...

thanks in advance

I disassembled mine, sprayed wd40 to get the old junk out, then repacked everything with grease.

Not sure that's best, but it helped to get any dirt out and clean the o-rings.

It takes a loooooooong time but it's better than shredded parts. I didn't do the maint pivot yet though.

wd40 should never touch any bike. i don't care how well you cleaned up after the wd40. maybe try whitelightning clean streak next time or something else
