Not for the type of xc that bike is built for, it really shouldnt...If you are riding the technical style trails that the evil excels in you wont need that kind of gearing...

Okay kids, can we agree that some people want a big ring and some people don't, if BS wants a big ring, he's allowed to have one?

Sorry if my massive leg muscles and amazing riding ability negate teh need for a bash ring

I thought the Jan rode singlespeed with a moto chain lubricated with the blood of gored bullfighters?

BV, what was your head angle on the Imperial?

I never measured. If the geometry charts are to be believed (and I have no reason to think they shouldn't be), my Imperial was 68 degrees, and the Sovereign will be a degree steeper.

props for having properly focused pics, instead of having them be focused on the floor behind your frame :D

...congrats on the ride, looks like you scored!! The Sovereign is definitely a very fun, versatile ride. The build pictured is only moderately weight conscious with hadley/ D3.1 wheels (running tubeless Spec. FT), Hone cranks & an 06 Z1 Light....weigns in @ 32# on my ultimate digital scale. Can really be setup with a short wheelbase & may take a little getting used to the HA (even a 130mm fork feels steeper than listed geo), but once you settle in, it rocks!:D

EDIT: Just reweighed to verify...31.74#

"BLOWING THROUGH THE BIG RING GNAAAAR!!!"

Awesome frame BV...I'll be building up my Specialist in the coming week to join the legions of weird small hardtail trailbike warriors. Wish I had the coin for a DOC or Sovereign, but the $40 on the Ells can't be beat...I'll buy one when it breaks. :D

BTW: That frame begs for a Pike...sell the compy, buy a Pike. Eh?

Geez, give me a little credit here, my pictures are never that bad, even if they're not pro quality ;)

I might take some "nice" pictures of the frame this morning in some better morning light. Yesterday I was just snapping shots on my lunch break, sun was a little too harsh.

Probably not, because I'm usually the one behind the camera :p

My Cove will weigh around 25# without sacrificing any strength. Crossmax Xl's, XTR stuff.
Good sh1t, bro. Have you worked out an easy SS convert for it? That'd be 2-3lbs off as well, and great for town.

Steeper is good. People are pussies about steep these days. Just stay on it.

The (almost) final build:

And, of course, my pièce de résistance, a unique, one-off trans blue bashguard from E.13. Last I knew there was only one other in existance and it was in the process of being destroyed by a team rider :p

First impressions:

- Holy crap, I forgot how much I loved being on two wheels...
- Holy crap, this bike fits really well.
- Holy crap, it's really, really unpleasant out right now... 60% humidity :dead:

I love the way the bike rides. The tires are too heavy but they work. Oh, and I've never actually ridden 6" rotors before (I've tried a lot of DH bikes, but not a lot of trail bikes), and the difference from the 8" stopping power is big!

Incidentally, I would like to call out Dogboy for not properly prepping this beautiful frame before he built it, since I took this off the bottom bracket shell (ugh, sorry for the blurry picture, it was taken one handed in an awkward position):

Also, this is my ghetto crown race setter. $4 at Home Depot for about 10ft of it:

Full size bike porn can be found here :D

That looks great! I have often drooled over the DOC myself.

I don't fully understand the price difference in the DOC vs. Sovereign. Is the DOC made overseas or something? I know the geo is different, but that wouldn't account for a 100% price increase.

The Sovereign is fully US made, while the DOC is made in Taiwan. The Sovereign has more adjustability in the dropouts, and much higher end tubing - it's a totally custom Reynolds 853 main triangle, and Reynolds 725 chainstays and seatstays.

The Sovereign's tubing was developed and created by Reynolds specifically for Evil Bikes for this project. The frame is assembled, welded and powdercoated in the US.

Lumagent; I don't have enough riding time on it to make a fair comparison yet. This feels much more like a trail bike to me but I'll keep the updates coming as I figure out more :)

Looks great, what chainring bolts are they?

Sorry about the stupid question, LOL
I'd like to introduce everyone to the beneficiary of my Imperial frame... and he might think about changing his signature ;) - take care of my baby!

The chainring bolts came with the bashguard. All E.13 bashguards and chainguides come with special chainring bolts and washers because the bashguard is so thick.

BV, I've been considering switching my Imperial for a Sovereign also. How do these two frames compare in terms of handling and compliance?
What are you looking for in a new frame?

Nice bike!

I hope that is not the way you really set the race. Pounding on the steerer with the fork drop outs resting against the floor is a great way to tweak the dropouts. They are not designed to withstand impact on their tips.

I use the same tool as you do for crown races, but I straddle the fork over a 2x4 that sits under the steerer. That way any bashing force goes into the 2x4, not the wimpy drop outs.

EDIT - I see you have a beefy through axle fork - disregard my caution. But all of you QR dropout folks - heed my words!!!
