watch the Freecaster replay - 115 inWhen was this? What did I miss? Just re-watched Gwin's run and not sure what you're referring to?
I agree with some points in the last remark regarding ghetto tubeless. When normal tubeless system will lose air due to strong turn forces the ghetto system won't, since the inner tube is connected to the tire rather than glued to the rim. The cons in the ghetto system that the tire might connected to the rim not as good as in UST/STANS. personally I never had a problem with 2PLYS maxxis with ghetto system but I guess (actually I know) I never took a turn as these guys...Running Stan's Rim strips and tubeless. Gee definitely just schralped the tire right off the rim. It's just one of the dangers of running a standard tubeless setup, and a huge risk to do it in an important race.
Should have stuck with tubes, or ghetto tubeless (because ghetto works better).
Not to mention that at the speeds these folks are moving sealant would not have time to seal a larger leak before the tire was seriously low for the run to be shot.that flat spot directly under the right pedal looks big enough to cause a flat, especially if he wasn't running sealant
Lulz.I thought tubeless was actually supposed to mean you pretty much never get flats...
Pressure from sponsors?it blows my mind that the Athertons are persevering with this setup, especially in race runs.
While I agree, I had a ghetto system burp on my front wheel in a rut in my biggest race of the year after I had it set up for 3 weeks, with a Maxxis tire, flow rim and a ghetto strip with lots of sealant. It didn't come off but I had to ride slowly.ghetto tubeless is great if you know how to do it right
and you have to make it few days before the actual riding day
the tire is glued to the ghetto cut tube on the rim. and even with low air pressure it wont come off.
Good interviews. Interesting to note Gwin was the only one (I think) who gave props to his team. The young guys are justifiably super stoked but need to remember the sponsors/team as well.finals chit chat and interview tips.
gee's frustration at his wheel situation is evident and gwin gives a little more info on his off track venture.
Every time I've tried to run tubeless on my dh bike, ghetto, UST rims......whatever, at some point I burp a tire in a corner. Most of us do things on a dh bike that we'd never risk on even a burly 6-8 more 'freeride' bike. It pushes the setup without a doubt in my mind. I gave up. Best case scenario is you ride down the hill with a half filled tire. Worst case scenario is you kill yourself in the next section due to reduced steering and control. I'm over it. And this is coming from someone who hasn't in the last 6 years and won't ever stick another tube on my trailbike. While I agree, I had a ghetto system burp on my front wheel in a rut in my biggest race of the year after I had it set up for 3 weeks, with a Maxxis tire, flow rim and a ghetto strip with lots of sealant. That's ok though; they're committed to use 661 helmets, but I'm seeing a lot of D3s recently...what do you mean dude? i thought notubes rims are totally legit dH rims.
pretty sure just this week they committed to using that setup for the rest of the season. good luck with that.

His rear wheel didn't survive his race run at this years SDA at Fort William eitherPressure from sponsors?
I can't imagine that Gee was stoked to be running the same wheels that cost him the win at Leogang.
Broken spokes one race, tire blown off the rim at the next.
Time to look for an alternate wheel/rim sponsor.

Sorry i meant in regards to how gee flatted and what he ran. Feel free to speculate about everything else under the sun.move on? this is the internet man! There are still pages upon pages of armchair engineering and speculation to come!
no, that's what I was commenting on and it still stands. Facts take the fun right out of internet speculation!Sorry i meant in regards to how gee flatted and what he ran. Feel free to speculate about everything else under the sun.
he was using the same setup when his wheel failed twice this year, correct? if so what are those failures attributed to?In regards to Gees tire and wheel. What happened at Ft William and here was unrelated. yesterday his tire did not burp. It was sliced, a big gouge that would have caused a flat with or without a tube on any tire. Through the sidewall of his contis that have plenty of extra protection there. Sliced, then flat then ridden off the rim.
Bad luck, he pushed hard and got off line into a sharp rock. Maybe missing a day of practice due to injury contributed to this.

You know those tears you sometimes get with tubeless that just sit there and squirt out sealant like a fountain?ft bill had nothing to do with tires. Big impact broke some spokes and de-tensioned another 10 or so. MSA as i stated above was a tire slice. As far as speculation i failed to mention that after running out of Stans they used Yop here in Canada. They should of gone with strawberry flavor instead of vanilla, the bigger chunks may have sealed the slice.
What rims is Gee on? I know they're branded Saint, but are they shimano made, or just something else, stickered up? If so, what? I've been told ZTR Flows, but I find it hard to believe Gee would be using something so fragile, especially somewhere like MSA.
