We all know you are.
Do you have anything constructive to add here? How did you end up in this thread?

I know at one point you were at the DOS prompt and typed "WIN", but how did you find your way here? Is Mosiac really compatible with RM?

Lynx, my good man, not Mosaic. That's way too late.

In a van.... down by the river
So my wife is making a bunch of calls today while I'm working. Another shop is quoting $3400 for a rebuilt engine installed. 50k mile warranty. The guy at this shop echoed the "maybe it's not as bad as you think" sentiment, and suggested doing a pressure check on radiator/cooling system among other things.

I think we're just going to limp this thing along and look at our options later in the year.

So one question - if it IS the head gasket(s), and right now it's minor, what are the odds of it failing completely and suddenly? (do they fail suddenly?)

If I flush the coolant regularly and change the oil often, can I drag this out?
No - this is not something you want to limp along with. When it fails you likely will cook the motor. You're lucky 'cause you caught it early. Seriously - don't you guys have any Subaru-specific shops 'round there? That's where I would start...

$3800:eek:...FWIW, I have heard that to do a phase 1 DOHC engine HG job, it's actually easier to pull the engine out to do the job right...
you can't even pull the head bolts out without the engine out, those DOHC motors have a very small space between the valve cover gaskets and the frame rail. it would be lunacy to try and do a HG job with the motor in the car.

Two responces. If you do indeed have a head problem, with as many miles as you have it really is best to go with a full rebuild.

Second..... Get it properly diagnosed... if its not a head gasket, then the answer is absolutly

Hmmm, thats funny cause last time I did a Subaru HG, it had these cool little plugs stuck in the frame rail taht came out, and my extension went right into the head bolts, allowing the heads to drop right out.

Trade some print work for engine work.

I just dropped $4200 into the Audi so I don't feel too bad for you right now. :)

Hopefully it is nothing major man.

Man... take a road trip to Colorado. Have the fix done here:

http://www.summitauto.us/

Here's what I got for $1600:

Both head gaskets
Clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing
Timing belt
New plugs
All 4 cam seals
Front & rear main seals
Intake gaskets
Valve cover gaskets
Thermostat

Seriously. :monkey:
you could ship your car to colorado, have SS shop fix it, and have it shipped back for cheaper than $3800....

Watchin' you. Writing it all down.
SS is a hippy. He'll probably try to fix it with patchouli, hemp, and soy products. Plus you'll never get the hippy stink out of your car. Just take it to that Subaru cemetery in that stupid commercial and burn it.

So the newest estimate is $500.00 - $1500.00 depending on what needs to be done from the local independent Subaru specialist. The shop recently relocated close to here so it didn't come up in a search last night. Highly recommended by several buddies for the exact same repair.

This should keep it going till next year and then I'm getting a Hummer.

I guess the point is that the subaru is pretty clearly on its last legs. There's a very good chance that something else will go wrong soon...be it suspension or exhaust or transmission or whatever...

Of course, you're free to do whatever you would like, but I learned my lesson last year when I bought what I thought would be a cheap beater to get me through a couple summers, but then I had to throw a new head gasket on, which turned into a new head, plus the work to make it right, and I'm still left with a car that won't appreciate in value and I invested half of the worth of the car into it. I could have traded it in and gotten a different vehicle, which, yeah, i'd have to sink money into, but it would at least be functional and hopefully not require any further maintenance. As it stands, my car runs now but I still have a few other problems, and the very real possibility of future maintenance.

Chicken. Remember - this is NOT like an Audi. ;)

It's an Audi, isn't it? ;)

In no way do I want to take on another car loan right now. The wife has been out of work for months, she is just now working only 1-2 days a week. I am working 40 hrs a week at a desk job, THEN printing in my shop almost every night trying to make ends meet. (I clocked 84 hours total last week)

We fully realize that something else can go wrong, but 195k on a Subaru is not "on it's last legs". This thing can have another 100k left on it or more. It's been well maintained, the head gasket issue is not from a failure on our part to keep up with oil changes, tune ups, etc.

The mech we took it to is the local Subie guru. They have a fleet of loaner Outbacks, that's what we are driving now till our car is done. The loaner is a '97 (only one year younger than ours) with 224k on it that drives like it has 24k on it.

They nitpicked our car pretty thoroughly. They said after the head gasket replacement we can expect to hit 300k or more with some TLC.

Suspension, muffler, etc are all ok for now. Even if it does need trans work in the next year or so we come out ahead. My wife and I have always been "drive it till the wheels fall off" kind of people anyway.
