Norway ??? Yeah....you would know about bad weather !

Tsssk. The Norwegian weather this winter, has been quite nice actualy. Here's no snow and ice, atleast not in the city, and the temp is good too. It's been like 40-50f average till now. It's not warm(!), but with an extra layer on, I can get out and cruise the streets. Had a superb streetride with a friend yesterday. If the weather's too ****ty I head for the indoor bmxhouse :D

There's no exuses folks. Get out (or in) and ride.

ummm... i drilled holes in my jackshaft cog! how fun is that? (snow on trails lead to idle hands). speaking of which, are the new left hand cogs narrower (than 1/8")? i've seen a couple rl's with narrow chains, but wasnt sure if this was a custom setup.
Very nice drillin' job ya did there, mistah! I wish I had the equipment to do the same.

BTW, mine are getting to the point where they need to be replaced. Is BMW the only place I can get some (I tried calling today, but only got the answering machine)?

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

its a ghetto mod - my machine shop consists of a cordless drill. i drew the hole pattern in cad then printed it out & center punched it onto the ring.

the splined cogs are proprietary bmw. keep calling.

NICE! Did you use a high speed bit or anything special? Do you think a regular bit would do the trick?

Yeah, I'd have to agree with that on many levels.

I like how the non-Bklyn owners are the most demanding in here. Sucks I haven't been shooting like I used to. Maybe I'll get back to it this year.

Here's a shot from the US Open where my buddy Jenna Rizzo (getting the congratulatory hug from yours truly) received a Park frame for winning the amateur class. I think Bklyn will be doing something at the Open again this year.

Hey hey Mark. I had a feeling that picture would bring a comment from you. Next time you see her please send her my regards. You plan on coming to the Open this year. Lots of time to plan ahead. You can ride the rest of the mountain if you like, or bring the kiddles and hike around to watch the racing. Or both.

Well I have a dual crown fork back on the Cheeta again - when's the date of the US Open?

And the loaner should be avail for a couple runs if you get the urge to splurge. I'm sending the shockenschtein in for a nitro-charge next month, it's almost three years overdue.

Yeah, what HRDTLBRO said, May 27-29. Me too can't wait.

Thanks for that loaner offer once again - that would be sweet to take a run or two on a BMW - closest I'll probably ever get to owning one!

Sending it to Avy to get nitro-charged? That's just down the road from me a bit in Colchester, CT - I should call and visit that place sometime.

I’m really glad I found this forum. I have been completely obsessed with BMW for almost a decade and it is comforting to know that there are others like me. I’m about to buy a Racelink. I need some advice. I’m thinking of putting a single-crown fork on it (first choice is the Fox 36, second Marz. 66). I realize this is a little crazy but here is my logic: I ride the shore and need something strong and that I can climb up on. The SC fork will shave a lot of weight and steepen up the angles to help me climb. I think the Brooklyn guys have some linkage to reduce the rear travel to 7” so there wouldn’t be an inequity between front and rear. I’d get a mini-link but I’m 6”4” and the mini-link would be a bit small for trail riding. The other unorthodox thing I’m thinking of doing with the Racelink is putting a Rolhof (sp?) hub on it. This will sure make for a heavy rear-end in relation to my SC up front. What do you guys think of these ideas?

the 7" 66 would be a fine match - actually there's a pic of doc's rl with one a couple pages back. though its not a super light fork at about 7lbs. i think running a shorter travel fork & reducing the rl's travel kinda defeats its purpose. its going to be really heavy for a mid-travel bike, and if climbing ability & lightness are important factors, there are probably better suited frames out there. the shore is mostly shuttleable, anyways - though i do ride my tmx up fromme - its not that bad for what it is. i'd say buy the frame & leave it alone; throw on a light 7-8" fork and sacrifice a bit of climbing efficiency; the downhill performance of that bike will more than make up for the effort going up.

regarding the rohloff - it uses a qr axle, so would be incompatible with the standard 12mm through-axle used on the rl. i suppose a kickass machinist might be able to engineer & fabricate some sort of axle / dropout solution, but i'm sure that'd involve lots of $$.

anyways. sorry for the naysaying (just IMHO) - buy that rl!

I sounds a litte bit strange when you're talking about climbing, and trailriding-ability on a racelink. It sure is an efficient pedaler, but its really heavy, and got a long-ish wheelbase. The 170mm 66 has 585mm / 22" axel to crown length. That's loooong. To compare, the 888 200mm. is only 5mm. / 0,2" longer! (RL has wheelbase of 1180mm / 46,5" with this setup).
If you'd like to steepen up the head angle a bit, and even get a light weight, try a 7" Boxxer, or a Super T. Imo, forget the Fox 36, is an airfork... And do remember to get the short derialleur-hanger, for minimum wheelbase.

Order that Racelink :thumb:

Is the Fox 36 really that bad? I thought someone rode it at that last Rampage?

One reason I’m thinking of using the Racelink as more of a “trail bike” is that I’m 240lbs and rarely land anything smoothly. I just want the option of going on some of the longer epic rides around B.C., that can’t be shuttled, and still attempt the odd big drop without snapping a frame ever month (I went through 8 RM9 frames in a year once, until they stopped warranting me). Having never even seen a Racelink in person I just want to know if this is even feasible. Obviously I would have to build it up pretty light (ti bb spindle, narrower tires, etc) if I was to even consider climbing any distance.

As for the Rohloff, it has different spacing and uses a QR so I figured I would have to do a lot of fabrication. I have access to a machine shop so I think I’ll give it a try. I was hoping that if I could get the Rohloff to fit I could eliminate all the chain guides on the swing-arm because I figure the chain could be taut.

I figure climbing is not good. The racelink is a racebike. It's not a mid travel trailbike. Pushing the bike up rather than climbing would probably be faster, however you're gonna love it on the way down - it'll be all worth it.

Not to be a downer, but I think your project is going to end up being far more painful than it's worth.

The 36 is intended as an aggressive trailbike fork; I don't think anyone rode it in the Rampage, but if they did, they must have been smooooooth... Especially under your weight, I would avoid it.

I understand the desire to own a Brooklyn, but don't sacrifice functionality for the sake of owning something botique. The Racelink is not a trail bike. To ride it as one would mean a lot of comprimise.

You'll end up with a heavy, long, slack bike that will be an exercise in pain to pedal up a hill.

What you should do, of course, is to buy the Racelink, build it up as a DH bike, and buy a trailbike for your non-DH purposes ;)

Here are some pix of my race link. I have tried it as a trail bike with a 66, lighter wheels (outlaws), single-ply Minions, a smaller chain ring, and jacked-up compression dampening. Not perfect as it is long - but fun none the less.
