I don't think it helped that I went directly from the Fiat to the Minolta. Slight shock to the system.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll increase the gearing and give it another shot.

Finally completed the Fiat race. Took a couple of laps in the 1'19's, but I did win with a fairly comfortable margin.

New Seasonal Events up! NASCAR at the Nuburgring! Just what everyone's been asking for.

stuck in the middle of the 4hr Roadster endurance race. i started at midnight and could only do 2hrs before my eyes started crossing.

NASCAR at the 'Ring? is nothing sacred?

what settings did you try for the Fiat 500 race?

Did like you said. I think with the lower gearing you were stuck sort of in between 2nd and 3rd gear on a lot of the corners. Going to the taller ratio allows you to use 2nd a lot more effectively. Thanks :thumb:

Finished the first of the new Seasonal Event races. Mini Cooper S at the shortened Cape Ring. Not too bad.

Nascar on the Ring was actually really fun. Probably the easiest one to gold of the new seasonal events (if you know the track).
We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. I've had no issues with the AMG events (mainly gold, some silver), but just can't come to grips with the NASCAR races.

The NASCAR races in the special events are much easier with a wheel. I couldn't get better than bronze or silver with a controller, but got gold 1st try on all of them with a wheel.

Well, the NASCAR Seasonal Event has to be easier than the Ford Focus one. I'm not even close. ~15 seconds off of first driving flat out with no significant mistakes. This one is going to be tough.

Edit: That seems to be the case for the Mustang/Laguna Seca event as well, unless I'm missing something on the tuning side.

Wanna trade? I suck at the Nascar one  but beat the focus one by a little over 4 seconds. :D

I'm late to the party since I sold my PS2 a long time ago and never picked a PS3 up.

Now that GT5 has come out, the time has come to pick one up. The only thing that it would be used for is racing sims, and perhaps the occasional FPS. I would likely pick up a wheel/pedals over time.

Looks like there are several consoles available, and I haven't kept up with things. How is this setup? Acceptable? Comes with the game plus some movie that I'm sure that I'll never watch. Looks like the price is comparable to buying the game and console separately...

Suggestions?

That Focus challenge is hard. Best I've done in 4 tries was silver. Managed to gold the Mustang one on Laguna Seca on my 3rd attempt.

@ dirtjumper, did you have to use skid recovery force to win the Focus event? I've heard of a lot of people using that just to gold that event....

I freakin' love this game. I played all available hours yesterday and today when not explicitly enlisted by the wife to do dishes or this or that.

After doing all of the Special Events, Seasonal Events, all the licenses (half gold, half silver, meh), and some low-level A- and B-spec stuff I had enough ducats to buy an Audi R8 (as in the LeMans racer). Booyah. That'll help clean up the event list nicely...

After GT5 came out, I've been playing GT4 on my PS2.

Finally today, I played GT5.

What you would expect is better is better, but I need to get a lot of game time to really appreciate the improvement.

Rallying with the auto-generated courses at night, with the signs reflecting back and the headlights casting light on the road ahead... fabulous. Also great is the Eiger Nordland K Trail. So much elevation change and great scenery. The Special Events and Seasonal Events are pretty cool, too, kind of like the old GT4 Driving Challenges.

I churned away at A- and B-spec today after finally knocking out golds in the Seasonal Event Focus ST and 394 hp RX-7 races. The latter was nervewracking--I'm not such a fan of Tsukuba (especially in the piggish 370Z, although the RX-7 is better) and logging ten <1:00.5 laps in a row was challenging with the traffic in the way, etc.

Now I'm sitting at A-spec level of 25 and B-spec just up to 14. My stupid B-spec dudes can't win the Daytona pickup truck or Laguna Seca < 1979 Supercar races...

I finally got a chance to put some more time in now that Christmas is over. Just got gold on the 3 Sebastian Leob challenges and finished off the 2nd set of seasonal races. Ive actually found myself putting a lot of time into the GT academy TT's. I think i've pretty much maxed myself out on all 3 tracks and am currently sitting 120ish overall in my region for combined time. Downloading one of the top 5 ghost replays and trying to stick with it was the most productive strategy for me.

I can't even get bronze in the second and third Loeb rally challenges! Gold in the first was pretty easy after the license tests with its segments but the others elude me.

You really need to tackle those last two with a "less is more" approach. Everything will feel really slow after flying around nurburgring in tuned super cars. Keep in mind sliding is slow, try to keep the car pointed where it needs to be going and be easy on the throttle, you shouldn't be flooring it unless you have a straight and the car is pointing straight. A small subtle countersteer under braking can help get the front end to turn in.

Turn traction control off, it's impossible to make any type of corrections to the attitude of the car with it on. It will only cause gobs of understeer in terrible places and makes it impossible to use the cars power to pull you through the back end of turns. I turn the ABS down to 1 at all times for all races and cars.

On Eiger the first 3rd is pretty straight forward. Brake early and smoothly, hit the apex of the turns with as little sliding as possible. On the second 3rd with the steep downhill, use the flashy gear indicator as a guide for when to start braking, slow down more than you think you need to and late apex all the turns so that you end up on the inside at the end of the turn. This will set you up for the next, and so on. The last 3rd is pretty straight forward as well, be smooth and steady through the hairpins and take as straight of a line through the kinks as possible.

Chamonix is all about throttle and slide control and I cannot stress it enough. Short shifting out of turns is mandatory, otherwise the torque spikes and the wheels spin everywhere. Again, try to keep the car pointed where you want to go and use a slight countersteer before the turns to get the front end to turn in.

Hope these tips help:thumb:

ABS to 1 even on dirt and snow? I'd been turning it off. For the climbing hairpins on the last third of Eiger are you dropping all the way down to 1st gear?

keeping the car pointed straight with the rally cars is the most important. and slow in/fast out.
i got gold easily following this technique, though the rally with the Focus took a few tries, but i still got gold going slow in/fast out and keeping the car straight since the power wont kick in at all unless its straight
TC and ASM off obviously and ABS to 1 always too

The Countach LP400 I won in A-Spec is apparently much faster than my Cobra. This is with almost all power mods and all weight reductions, and an understeer-heavy setup for my ham-fisted B-Spec divers. Despite a much better power to weight ratio in the Cobra they couldn't put the power down at Laguna Seca in the rwd beast.

Yes, ABS at 1 is just enough to save you a bit in case you put the brake to the floor but wont kick in too early. I really wish logitech would incorporate some type of force feedback in the brake pedal to better simulate the pedal vibration when ABS kicks in. Not really sure what ABS feels like in a high end car but in every normal car Ive driven its pretty obvious.

I used 1st gear a lot on Eiger: First right hander by the train station, downhill right hand turn after the climb, and the uphill switchbacks on the last 3rd. On that last part I would go to first, punch the gas to turn the car in then short shift to 2nd and accelerate out.

My B-spec dudes finally figured out how to drive MR cars, or rather, I figured out that they need a ton of understeer dialed in else they're spin-happy cretins. One step harder tires up front, no front camber, a good deal (~-1.8) negative rear camber, and as hard up front and soft out back as possible in roll stiffness and then they can go full reta^Haggressive and not spin out all over the place.

Gold now in B-Spec historic/Laguna Seca in a Countach LP400 and in the Lightweight British Cup in a 111R. :thumb:

i think they could have done without B-Spec racing in the game. all the time could have been put to more races and more defined graphics for the 800 older cars

B-Spec is really just a way for them to show off their AI, for better or worse. I doubt it took much extra time since they need to code the AI for A-Spec anyway. I like it as a diversion, and to keep one "in the game" while doing other things around the house. Ultimately it'll become a overnight nice credit-churner for me, too, once I unlock the B-Spec endurance races...

What wheels are you guys using? I can't afford a G27 (or a G25 really) but I'm looking at the Fanatec Carrera (base model) and the Driving Force GT. I hear the DFGT has amazing Force Feedback but the Fanatec has 3 pedals and a 6+1 H-pattern. Also, a major deciding factor, is that even though the wheels are about the same price I have a $100 gift card to GameStop, which means the DFGT will only cost ME ~$40 where as the Fanatec will be $160+shipping.

So really all I'm asking is: what are your thoughts on the DFGT as a decent affordable race wheel?

ive heard good things about the DFGT and the price is one of it's best features too. GT5 finally gave it a "official" certification too.

I've heard good things as well except for the fact that it's a bit noisy from the gear-driven FF. I have to spend this $100 card anyways so I think I'll be picking up a DFGT later tonight after Taco Tuesdaze :D I'll let you guys know how it fares.

If anyone else has any experience with this wheel feel free to post up. I don't want to spend all that money and have it be a piece of sh!t.

the RX7 race in the bonus series is driving me nuts. the best i got was 3rd after cutting a corner off completely but i restarted before i crossed the line.
tried all combos of TC o1/off, Skid recovery on/off, top speed increase on tranny....

all the others were somewhat easy compared to this

Picked up the DFGT a little bit ago. Going to hook it up and try it out but I need to go to Lowes and get material to build a stand. Anyone ever build their own stand? Blueprints? Google search yielded minimal results, and I'm pretty sure I could fashion something decent, I'd just like an idea of where I'm going to go with this. It needs to be portable to store in my "office" and get brought out to the living room...

I like my DFGT. $75 + shipping as dented box from Logitech makes it even sweeter. :D It is noisy, though, no denying that.

This the 394 hp Tsukuba one? I used the Premium RX-7 FD from the dealer, iirc. It's purty. I got the hp exactly at 394 with no turbo mods and did all the weight reduction possible. TC off, ABS 1, skid recovery force on if it's an option, around -2.5 front camber and -1.0 in the back to help the car rotate. You need 10 laps around 1:00.5. High 59s are possible so it's tough but not impossible.

I use a side table. Not perfect as far as foot/hand positioning, but, hell, it was free and is portable enough.

One of my B-Spec dudes finally figured out how to drive Daytona without stabbing the brakes all the time, and went from sad mid-pack pickup truck series finishes to taking 1st by 15 seconds... with the exact same truck.

Gah. Oh well, at least he got better.

I just clamp my wheel to my desk or clamp a 2X4 to my crappy futon couch and clamp the wheel to that. You need make it pretty stable as even a 4'X4' folding table was getting pushed around by the force feedback.

Been working on that one today, best I could do was 7th (with laptimes ranging from 1:02 - 1:05, mostly 1:03). These seasonal events are going to be what drives me to buy a wheel...

haha, I'm playing off of my couch, sitting on a couple pillows with one behind me and the wheel clamped to the ironing board :D I'm going to Lowes tomorrow to get stuff to build a stand. I absolutely love the wheel. Can't complain for $140
