Trails so badass right now with cold nights causing hard freezes. This won't last long. Crust "season" should be in about a week or two. Things will end pretty quickly at that point and we'll be on pavement until saturated ground dries, which is like a month...

Got out for one final (I'm pretty sure) skate ski with my son yesterday
1648045257980.png

we managed to get out before the corn started freezing again, but it was definitely firming up as we were exiting.... I got cross-rutted at the bottom of a big long hill and took a pretty high speed tumble (probably over 35km/h - it was quick out there). no aches or pain this morning, so I'll take that as a sign my healing is going well.

blows me away how quick and comfortable the boy is on his skis. at the bottom of the hill he took off like a rocket, no chance of me even keeping him in sight. It's also amazing how much balance is required for skate skiing, and how far his balance has come. the ease at which he can glide on one ski, over uneven terrain is impressive to see. (and this is not just him, but all the kids in his age group. it's amazing to watch them go from bambis on ice to having practically olympian-like ease on the skis)

The fine line of urban sprawl and our trails.

These would be awesome to fall on. Don't understand how anyone could leave these cutoff like that...

Nice day exploring some alternative trails. Can't really compare elevation to yall others, but holy shit these are steep. We went up one trail, which was slick with mud, and steep enough to warrant there being a rope/cable to help get up. No switchbacks here.

The steep spot before the steep spot. Instead of just a rope, they actually had a garden hose with a steel cable going through it, sounds odd but actually provided ample grip, compared to a sketch rope.

Cool rock arch for @jdcamb

Little 100 mile race today in the White Mountains north of Fairbanks. Got 7th. I always think like 20 people are ahead of me but it’s usually half of why I think and I pick off enough that it totally surprisedsme at the end.

Here’s how next-level the winner is. I’m 9th, not far behind. At times in a race like this, hell, a lot of the time, it takes everything I have just to keep moving. After finishing, the winner decided to go out and take another 100 mile “lap”, to see if they could beat the race cutoff times. F-ing crazy. (edit: official results now)

How long does it take to ride 100 miles in those conditions?

Trackleaders (we all had spot trackers furnished) says I took 10hrs 41 min. Time does vary significantly with conditions, some was warm and real soft, but most was good. It’s still a lot more rolling resistance than most are used to on snow. Main thing is to keep riding, not be taking time at checkpoints.

I was #20.

So the race leader after doing 9 or whatever hours is heading out for another 10hrs ride? What madness.
