40lb post! DH/FR Rigs around the 40lb mark! tips, pics, specs

I knew someone was going to call me on that. I am a firm believer in single-ply tires. In ten years of DH racing, I have yet to flat in a race run with them, and I attribute many podiums and wins to the performance gain they give. You have to be pretty smooth to pull it off, some of my friends have tried it with less-than-satisfactory results. But I will also admit, I don't think most of the courses around here are insanely rough.
what tires do you run? i've been thinking about trying a lighter alternative to my typical michelins for local (shore/whizzler) riding. is there any decent slightly lighter aggressive rubber out there? i'd love to see something like kevlar beaded 2-ply, or a thicker single ply variations of a decent tread pattern.

Are you sure of that weight because for the first time in Internet forum history I think that bike might be lighter than the claimed weight you have

I used my hanging digital scale, which I think is fairly accurate but I've never checked it against any others. It weighed right at 41.0 as pictured.

There's a bit of fat that could be trimmed if I was serious about making it lighter. Tubeless, smaller front tire, lighter cranks, etc. The only change I'm considering at the moment is if (read: when) the rims get all dented up I'll put on some 823s and start running tubeless.

Do what I do, I use 3 different scales and give it a high average for safety. That way you know its a little lighter then claimed. My F1 is 39.8 with single ply tires and I could lose weight in the fork and rims but 40 is the sweet spot.
BTW: tubeless and Bootleg sucks, go dual ply and xc tubes. Way too much tire deflection do to the moon rock surface.

Beleive it or not I have a Kona Stinky but for DH that weighs in at 39.25 and when I get more money to spend it'll get a little more diet. I'll post pics when I get some of it I just finished building it.

Just got the guide from a buddy who also build fenders under the name DGS . From the bash guard to the lower guide pulley is a rolled edge--very strong high-end carbon. Really stoked on the guide.

Yeah seriously, any DH race builds should include dual ply 2.5 rubber.

Over here, there's no real tracks where you could get away with singleply (and still run fast times / not flat), so that weight may as well be 38.44 to be comparable fairly.
Thats why they race all over the world vs. just Australia. There are lots of tracks that can be had with single ply as well as alot that cannot. Therefore single ply is an acceptable item as is carbon....

At some point at or around 40lbs its not worth it anymore. I wont get rid of my fork or rims to shave another 1.8lbs. Its now balanced at 39.8 and rides like a DREAM.
I'll second that. 40lbs is the magic number. Anything beyond that, you've either got:

A. A lot of money.
B. A questionable parts choice.
C. A bad scale.
D. All of the above.

For the privateer, 40(ish) is where its at.

40 is the DH sweet spot on weight you can add for a course or shed for a course and its still light enough to be manuverable and take a beating. :cheers:

Any reason you didnt just run a BMX chainwheel instead of the profile spider adapter and MTB ring? Im asking because thats what I just set up... wondering which is lighter?

The chain wheels are lighter then a spider + chain ring. If you run no bashy you also don't have to use 4 chain ring bolts.

Lightest chain wheel i have seen is the Funn hore, but its a bugger to set up with a e13, if your using an e13 the crownwheel is best as it has the ramped step.

Crown wheels are also stronger imo. I have bent a few spiders, but never bent the 40tooth e13 crownwheel i was using.

I'm fairly sure a E13 super spider + E13 guide ring is lighter and arguably stronger than a E13 crownwheel, that's atleast what i've heard from a number of e13 team riders

Why do some people measure their bikes without pedals on? That seems very silly to me. That's like me saying my Uzzi weighs 34lbs without my wheels and tires on

rides like it's 5lb lighter with the low mass centralization, taking off a lot of unsprung weight and placing it all in the very middle. Thing manuals like my 24" street rig!

How do you like those spinergy wheels? The team my buddy races for can get some deals on them but I haven't heard any real word on them.
I like them a lot. they are super stiff and strong, not to mention they look amazing. they could be a little lighter, but they still roll forever once you get them moving.

Hey acadian,

how you get on with those pedals? Ive been looking at them for a while but not heard reports...
been running them on all my bike for a while now - but unfortunately Tioga decided to stop making them. They are light, wide, grippy and most importantly relatively cheap. downside, the spindle on them bend easily. I've bent 3 pairs in the past year.

A few months ago I bought some Specialized Low Pro Mag pedals to try out. After switching a few pins for longer ones, I'm pretty damn stoked with those. I'm running them on two other bikes and they have been great so far.
