Barley wine???
But it's only 9%

Low alcohol barley wine?
I think the original barley wine that it was crafted from came in at ~9%. Then they let it age for 3+ years in bourbon barrels. No clue what the final ABV came out to (and I don't think they knew either), but after one 12oz glass I probably shouldn't have been driving home from the brewery...

(Aren't most barley wines between 9 and 13% alcohol? SN Bigfoot is only 9.6%.)

That is(was) my "local" beer growing up just south of Philly.

Been on the brewery tour a few times now. The thing that gets me about this one is that something fishy is going on there.

Teh tour lady said that they use the same yeast in all their beers... Yet they offer both a Lager AND an Ale. How is that possible? Either the tour lady is wrong, or their ALE is not an ALE at all. Lagers bottom ferment, Ales Top ferment... Two totally different yeasts that work at two different temps. Yeah, you can do a STEAM beer with Lager yeast at Ale temps, but that is a unique situation.

Or a Baltic Porter using Lager yeasts at Ale temps. My guess however is that the lady has no clue what she's talking about.

do you really expect a lady giving a tour at the yuengling plant to provide reliable information about yeast?

Just having an Emersons brewers reserve special release of rolling moon wheat beer.
I dropped in at the beer specialist bottle store on the way home from the home brew shop (going to have my first attempt at an Imperial Russian Stout for next winters drinking) and I picked up some;
Townsend "old house ESB"
Mikes organic "Imperial IPA"
Emersons "Rolling moon"
Tuatara "APA"

going to finish this beer put some pedals on the project bike and head back as the head brewer from Emersons is getting the BBQ going and doing a beer and food matching demonstration starting in about 30mins. :D
tempted to grab a bottle of Green Flash "La Freak" while I'm there......

*edit* F*ck this town rocks, bring on the summer! :wee:

Quantity over quality this evening, though I didn't skimp on the quality TOO much.

12'er of Yeungling. I've taken down 1/2 by myself so far.

Finishing off the Rolling moon whilst i brew my first Imperial Russian Stout. :D

Should be ready in time for next winter...... As a side project (project mayhem) I'm also re seasoning an old oak sherry barrel, soaking it in cheap sherry to tighten it all up and I'm going to age some of the IRS in it.... I'll give some 3 months aging and some will go to 6 months. Just cos I'm curious as to what will happen. :)

went out X-Mas shopping today with the wife and kids, and the only thing i came back with is a 12 pack of Red Hook. All in all, a successful day.

Today is a good beer news day.... Got told the ship with my container of beer arrived from germany, docked last night and then on arsebook I see this message from my fave local bar.......

21 December at 17:30 at Hashigo Zake
Hashigo Zake becomes the first outlet in New Zealand to serve Green Flash beer on tap. We'll put West Coast IPA, 30th St Pale Ale, Hophead Red and maybe one oth...er on tap at once, offer discounts to anyone wanting to work their way through the whole range, and we'll be as generous as ever, maybe even more so, with the samples. We may even be persuaded to part with a little of the precious merchandise that's sharing container space with the beer.

Oh and right now I'm drinking a 750ml bottle of Belgian Poperings Hommel bier.

Glad to see some of the mediocre breweries jumping on to the higher-priced special releases. Just in the last couple days I saw this and Red Hook's special release. Leinenkugel's has been doing a similar product as well, although I haven't been willing to cough up the $11/4-pack to try it out. More options for the consumer are ABSOLUTELY a good thing.

btw, how's the beer?
