This was probably my last ride of the season. Most stream crossings (on Mountain Lion) were iced over. Only maybe a 20' section of ice on the actual trail, though, on the section that usually has a bit of running water.

New tire day, too.

Railing stuffs have been delivered to the driveway so hopefully everything finally done by next weekend (paint in basement and on the line set cover, railings). Then finally a Vacasa clean, photo day, and getting it listed. Long process is long.

At some point we will do something with the loft, and build out an actual bedroom and another full bath in the basement. Maybe the summer after next?

Anyway, I measured the loft with the measuring app on my phone today to see what sort of space we will have to work with to make a “primary suite”, as it’s now called.

there’s some inaccuracy in these measurements for sure, but it’s certainly on the order of 24 x 18’. It has a sloping ceiling overhead: 8’ tall at the labeled 18’ 0.2” wall, right around 14’ at the wall opposite that. The blue wall in the crude diagram has the hookups for the abortive kitchen.

All dressed up to see The Lion King. Vaccine or 72 hr PCR test check-in at the theater went smoothly.

If I settle for 2 fairly roomy rows the Hyundai Ioniq 5 may be a viable option for me come next summer or fall. Perhaps I should hold off on the short-tires-for-Land Cruiser experiment.

Ioniq 5 pricing announced, quoted including destination:

SE Standard Range (58 kWh)
168HP Single Motor (RWD), 220 Miles of Range: $40,925

SE (77.4 kWh)
225HP Single Motor (RWD), 303 Miles of Range: $44,875
320HP Dual Motor (AWD), 256 Miles of range: $48,375

SEL (77.4 kWh)
225HP Single Motor (RWD), 303 Miles of Range: $47,125
320HP Dual Motor (AWD), 256 Miles of range: $50,625

Limited (77.4 kWh)
225HP Single Motor (RWD), 303 Miles of Range: $51,825
320HP Dual Motor (AWD), 256 Miles of range: $55,725
These prices are before tax credits: axe $7,500 Fed and $2,500 CO, for instance (but TTL on the full price as ever).

What do these trims mean? Some highlights:

SE: 19" wheels. Cloth seats. Autobrake but no adaptive cruise. One must deign to touch the door handles to make them pop out, a la a Model 3.

SEL: Automatic door handles, power liftgate. Adaptive cruise with autosteer.

Limited: 20" wheels. Panoramic sunroof, HUD, Bose 8 speaker stereo. Fancy full-recline seats with a foot rest because why not? Surround view monitor, Honda-style side cameras on display when changing lanes. Automatic parking.
Seems the SE only makes sense if one's holding out for the small battery RWD variant. Otherwise the step up to SEL seems a no brainer. SEL vs Limited is tougher for $5,100 for the AWD versions, as it's all trinkets at this point.

My brother got the Ionic 5 a month ago. I think large battery RWD. It was basically this is what we have in stock take it or leave it. So far he is happy with the purchase. Like a lot of happy EV owners he also has second ICE car for long road trips.

Between catching up on billing my consulting work and some CARES Act funds being passed through to us I'll be getting some extra ducats. Perhaps it'll even cover the new radiant controller in the spring.

nah, that'll probably be more…

In case anyone is keeping track, I think I’ll keep my front and rear speakers as they are in the Denver setup and instead add actually elevated height channel speakers. Thinking SVS Prime Elevation for this.

This would be cheaper than the alternative of new fronts and rears with built in up firing Atmos elevation speakers (and the matching center). Still will require an Atmos capable 9.2 receiver for this 5.1.4 setup.

Then at the mountain place, now that I won’t have a whole extra 5.1 setup to repurpose, maybe just an Atmos sound bar for ease of installation and setup.

I’m game for Copper or WP. Will be doing easy weekday laps with wife on the 12th and 26th. Will also have our little ripper one-day-shy-of-9 year old on the latter date.

After this weekend, I don’t want anything smaller or less usable than our current (PHEV) minivan. Changing kids into ski gear is enough of a pain. Don’t want to make it tougher in exchange for using less gas.

Stock dimension tires it shall be, the KO2s to the shed, and I’ll hold out for a VW ID Buzz for both me and the missus. (Or if a similar EV with 3 rows and sliding doors makes it to market sooner then that.)

38.7” headroom in 3rd row means I fit. Can touch the headliner if I don’t slouch. Lines up with 39.1” 100 series being fine and 38.2” 200 series being a touch tight.

The technology of speakers is fascinating, with the different treatments for each of the ranges and even the case design.

But when the review then segues into talking about subjective perception of how individual albums were rendered it loses me. Ultimately that is the test, true, but I don’t trust this guy or know these albums or his room.

When my parents designed their ridiculous house in Coos Bay I picked out their speakers along with my dad. I did so via auditioning multiple sets in a listening room here in Seattle. I think it was at Definitive Audio. Anyway, we both decided that the speakers of choice per our ears, in that room, of those available to switch between, were Dali, of all things, and as installed in their Oregon house they do indeed sound very good.

(I’ve posted about Dali before in this thread but don’t know the exact model. Maybe the Euphonia based off of the case design? More likely the Grand, I think, based off of their large size and the timeline of the house.) ((Update from my dad: they are Euphonia MS5.))

The point is that reviews aren’t very useful, imo: they can illustrate the unique design choices well but the true relevant data of how they sound can’t be summed up usefully.

Clearly the railing didn't get installed by the weekend after this post, which was 19 days ago. Slow contractor is slow.

But per the front door lock log he did swing by the house a half hour ago, so as to redo the last patch of drywall at long last and to move the railing material into garage bay 2 to await better weather.

At least once the drywall is done then my painter dude can paint the basement. One more step towards getting listed... for next winter. :D

I have faith that it'll be listed by spring break! Maybe it'll rent then, or for summertime peoples since we have the fancy heat pump setup now to keep it comfy year round.

Or maybe it'll even be done by Presidents Day weekend, where we won't be up since there's no Devo. I have little faith in the latter, though.

I am hiring a crew from the outfit that plows the driveway to shovel the back deck. They should be by tomorrow.

Tonight I cleared a swath abutting the house the width of the plastic orange shovel we found lying about (cleared this for fear of water intrusion), but ain’t nobody got time for the whole deck. There’s about 11 x 50’ remaining of it with roughly two feet of heavy snow on it.

I’ll gladly pay others to take care of that for me since my kids are too young to be useful here, not to mention the whole lack of railing status.

As nice as it is to just have the poors put themselves at risk you may want to consider your liability exposure.
I let head plow dude know about the railing situation up front.
