thats a neat 3 ton jack.

i saw a 100% aluminum snap on jack the other day at a store. the brushed finish was to drool for. supposed to be a racing one, 3 pumps and the car was all up. it was like 5kg only.... and US$600 plus 19% sales tax
yikes. the jack is the same one that most of the autocross crew rocks: all aluminum model from harbor freight, ~$75 USD on sale periodically.

there is a lot of cool stuff on that website.... i feel like a kid browsing a toy catalog... that jack seems nice. but 35lbs seems a bit heavy for being aluminum.

hey toshi, what obcii readers are good?
are those $100-$200 interfaces for laptops with open source code libraries as good as the expensive dedicated readers???
any reason why getting one over the other?

i had PocketLogger on a palm. it kind of sucked: poor interface, slow refresh rates, inconsistent in actually communicating with the car's communicator. i ebayed the sw and the cable for $25 or something ridiculous. :D

i'd go for one that uses a laptop, assuming you have a laptop already.

maybe so, but with what you'll be making as a diagnostic radiologist, that will soon be pocket change.... I'm just looking forward to finishing my second year... hooray step 1's!
that's the idea. unfortunately rent is due now, not 6 years from now ;) . after paying this month's rent and utilities i forecast that i will have approximately $1.50 in my checking account. if financial aid is not disbursed this month then i'll grab an interest-free short term loan from the school...

hey toshi... remember that city2city race with the outrageous average speeds i was ¡talking about.

these are the times (fresh, that stage ended 3 hours ago), for the top 10 for that stage.
1 J.Kankkunen (FIN) / S.Harjanne - FL 00:35:54:00
(00:00:00:00)
3 R.Orlandini G. (PE) / D.Zuloaga - FL 00:36:03:00
(00:00:09:00)
14 E.Jochamowitz (PE) / G.Medina - CAM 00:36:18:00
(00:00:24:00)
70 C.Ibarcena (PE) / P.Nuńez - FL SCE 00:37:11:00
(00:01:17:00)
12 L.Alayza de L. (PE) / I. Bromberg D. - CAM 00:38:03:00
(00:02:09:00)
5 R.Palomino (PE) / E.Arimbongo - FL 00:38:13:00
(00:02:19:00)
6 R.Palomino (PE) / W.Palomino - N4 00:39:45:00
(00:03:51:00)
65 J.A. Baertl (PE) / J. Baertl Jr - MASTER 00:40:24:00
(00:04:30:00)
29 G.Valerga (PE) / P.Romero - TS 00:40:34:00
(00:04:40:00)
11 F.Ferrand B. (PE) / F.Ferrand M. - CAM 00:41:15:00
(00:05:21:00)
10 R.Matos (PE) / J.Andia - N4 00:41:53:00

that was 133km of tarmac in 35:xx minutes.... about 220km/h average speed. the last stage (the fastest one) is being raced right now.... i bet something around 250km/h will be the average for the last leg.

earlier this morning before that one, there was a 547km stage (yes, in one sprint) that was raced in 3 hours and 5 minutes. 188km/h average over 3 hours. a bit over 600 miles of tarmac roads in the last "leg". the record is under 5 hours.
take that FIA rulebook! :busted:

results for the last 109km leg are in. the stage was from roughly a beach town south of lima, to the toll gate entering lima. top ten

1 J.Kankkunen (FIN) / S.Harjanne - FL 00:26:18:00
(00:00:00:00)
4 R.Dasso (PE) / M.Baca - FL 00:26:30:00
(00:00:12:00)
14 E.Jochamowitz (PE) / G.Medina - CAM 00:28:50:00
(00:02:32:00)
12 L.Alayza de L. (PE) / I. Bromberg D. - CAM 00:29:15:00
(00:02:57:00)
6 R.Palomino (PE) / W.Palomino - N4 00:31:03:00
(00:04:45:00)
29 G.Valerga (PE) / P.Romero - TS 00:31:20:00
(00:05:02:00)
52 G.Valdez N. (PE) / J.Valdez - S1600N 00:33:24:00
(00:07:06:00)
46 J.Valenzuela (PE) / W.Calle E. - TS 00:33:25:00
(00:07:07:00)
10 R.Matos (PE) / J.Andia - N4 00:33:33:00
(00:07:15:00)

109km in 26 minutes.... my guess was almost there.. 251km/h average speed in a closed public highway for the last one.
ridiculous.

cool. WRC cars or something other?
they used to be competitive, but not anymore. since they made the "suv" category, people dont race wrcs anymore.
there were group N, and S1600 but the winning categories arent FIA categories.

FL is open, basically cars group N cars, but free breathing with optimized gearing and virtually no restrictions on suspension, engine internals, etc, etc... R. Dasso is the dad of a friend of mine. he says his dad´s impreza puts out around 360hp in tarmac trim on pump gas set up to handle the 3+ hour tarmac stages at redline.... (though am guessing a bit more since it does over 300km/h with the spoiler on).
kkk was racing a similar impreza.

then the "SUV" category... which is almost open, mostly subaru foresters sti with advantage of 0.5L over the "group N". they pump out over 400hp, but are at aerodynamic disadvantage over the FL.
a lot of people race that category because of a loophole that makes "SUVs" hard to beat.

the winner was a mitsubishi outlander with a 2.2 evo IX engine on a 6sp tranny. rumor on the street says 420ish hp. this the winner, an "suv" that does 300+km/h... heh

i think kankkunen (5th overall) didnt place better because he had a bad car. had a lot of problems with the steering for 800km of the 2500km or race. lost like 90 minutes there.

the speedometer is already past its 240/kmh limit and the tachometer is about to hit 6k rpm, redlines at 7500rpm.
not the same spot at the stage though.

went on a real ride today with a high school riding buddy. skookum flats: http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=skookum+flats&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 . 12ish miles out and back (ie, 6 x 2). 2:45, a good time for that route given that 1/4 mile was washed into the river and everything was predictably slick.

if any of you east coast types make it out to visit washington, skookum is one of the trails you should ride: it is chock full of roots, ups, downs, shored up off-camber sections, mini trials sections, and winds by a nice river.

on another note, the tops of the mountains all had snow, and mt. baker supposedly already has 20". going to be a good year...

:)

driving back up the oregon coast on 101 i saw a most impressive series of cars going the other way, all in a row, clearly on some club drive:

a Maserati MC12 followed by no less than four Lamborghini Gallardos...

wow. the maserati is a ~$1 million car, just for the record.

i went on a very expensive ride today:

my middle school riding buddy, jeff, and i headed out to the tapeworm trail this morning. it's a twisty trail to say the least, with many switchbacks that aren't more than 15 feet in length. it also has the benefit of staying relatively dry year-round, important today because of the torrential rain and heavy winds we've been having around seattle (66 mph in west seattle yesterday).

the ride itself was fine, and i exerted myself enough that my multiple layers felt too hot. before the second lap i wrapped my shell around my neck and under my shoulder, squeezing the pocket to make sure that my precious iPhone was still hanging out where it should be.

after the ride i was a bit, well, stupid, and left my helmet and gloves on top of the car. they were retrieved without much ado after they flew off, but in the hubbub i decided to listen to the radio rather than deal with the oh-so-arduous task of taking my iPhone out, plugging it in, and starting up a fresh track. i then went home and took a nap.

i headed out for the night about an hour ago (at the gf's now), and when i started up the car and instinctively reached for the phone it wasn't there. a little more exploring in the pocket reveals that the liner has a hole in it just about the size of an iPhone.

:(

for the record i'm cheap when it comes to clothing, and this particular shell dates from 1999 or 2000. i guess it serves me right.

agh.

Cliffs Notes: had hole in pocket of 1999-era shell. went on ride, did acrobatics with said shell. iPhone fell out, is nowhere to be found.

yeah sorry to hear about the iPhone Toshi.... :(

ironically I'm the same about clothing - I have several pair of shorts that has no more pocket liner...so I have to make sure I don't put anything in them. Sometimes I get pretty embarrassed - like when I buy stuff at the store, pay cash and put all the change in my pocket...which obviously ends up falling all over the floor ;)
